Diffy ID and trailing arm question....
K, I'm just curious what this rear end is. It's a monster, I know that.
Do I need to replace this trailing arm? The other side isn't like this. |

Yep, the legendary HO52. Probably with 4.10 gears. Since it's coil sprung you've got a 3/4 ton truck - I'm guessing '69?
Typical carrier with good-old one wheel wonder. If it's in good shape keep it that way, because once they go south basically plan on swapping in a Dana 60 or something. Keep it sealed tight with clean oil. The parts are no longer available with the exception of a new ring/pinion. I had mine rebuild and shouldn't have. Ended up with a good differential, but it was expensive. 3.90 gears + a detroit locker at the time, but now the locker isn't available for them any more either, so you'd be SOL...

Oh, and your trailing arms have been abused as heck. You can find a good set of used ones and have them patched up at the local weld shop. Then coat them with something and throw in some new bushings and new U-bolts for the axle. That's what I did with mine and they look brand new. I don't think yours are salvageable though. You might be able to separate the reinforcement plate from the beam, and re-weld them together after cleaning, but it looks pretty rusted.
