project questions??
I'm thinking of building up a 71 or 72 lwb c10 from ground up. what's bothering me is I see you guys buying cabs and frames, etc., and I was wondering if you have to deal with vin numbers on each seperate part.
You see I had a friend of mines who bought a custom 69 stepside, and was later hassled by the cops who gathered up all the numbers on the truck, like the frame, cab, etc.. As they ran them they found that none of them matched up and that it was considered stolen and it was soon hauled off. And boy, was that thing nice, it was paint some tang color w/ a mid 90s fiberglass stepside bed on it, with a four link rearend and custom frontend also. My questions is what do you guys do to avoid this delimma or do you just build it without a worry? Last edited by SkyBlue72'; 06-06-2004 at 02:03 AM. |

Id say if your going to worry the VIN plate is on the cab frame or the door I think and its riveted one so just change it over and dont worry about it.

it's a good question , i think it varies widely from state -to-state,i,ve lived in states where i've never had the dmv ever(30+years) look at a vin plate and now i live in a state that they 've looked at every one . but they just look at the vin plate, i've heard of other states however that check the plate on the cab and also the vin# on the frame as well to assure matching numbers on the 2units. best thing i guess would be to check with your local DMV or even the state police to see the proper procedure for switching units

The numbers are stamped on the drivers side frame rail just before the engine mount bracket.

Good Post Skyblue72! Are the frame #'s and cab #'s supposed to match bang on from the factory? This could cause some interesting confusion if some of the trucks left the factory mixed up! I wonder how far back (in years) GM kept serial #'s, anyone know?
