Pitman Arm Question
I need to find a drop pitman arm for what I believe is a '70 gear box. The arm I have has the tie rod kinda joint at the end and I haven't been able to find one yet. Anyone have an idea where I can get one?

The pitman arm intself has just a hole in it for the drag link, and it is splined with a pinch bolt on the box side. Is this what you are talking about, or the drag link itself? The Pitman arms are the same on the solid axle trucks until 1992. If you need a drop, the drop steering arm (attached to the knuckle) is the way to go. You can actually buy drop steering arm, drop pitman arm, AND a drop drag link for the retardedly large lift... The drag link (tie rods and adjuster sleeve) should be available at any reasonable parts store.

the steering arm will probably
be the cheapest and can be found anywhere that sells lifts. should be around 50 bucks.

I have a 1966 Suburban, 4x4. The big question for me is whether or not you are still using the original front end. If you have gone with a newer disk brake frontend then I'm with Stan79Chevy. If you are using the old closed knuckle frontend.......then you are in trouble. You would have to have a steering arm made by someone. If you have one made, make sure that they machine the tierod balljoint taper for the newer draglinks. I had to have a special tapered insert made (I was young and had no problems with the old manual steering) so the new style draglink would fit the old steering box. I have since switched to powersteering.
Good luck! |

Bought my 2" drop steering arm from Off Road Design it was made by Skyjacker it was for my 70 GMC. Agree with the other guys though get a raised steering arm if you need the correction cost about $40 cheaper. A drag link that has about 4" of correction will be about $50 more than the pitman arm($90). If you have a closed knuckle front you'd probably be better off swapping to a 71+ front.

Thanks guys.
I'm thinking what I have is a 2wd pitman arm. I'll get the 4wd pitman arm with a 2 inch drop and a new drag link. Yep, it's got the original closed knuckle dana. I just went all through it this winter. Long, involved frame off.

The 4wd pitman arm has splines for about 1" inside the hole that attaches to the gear box. Plus a bolt to tighten it to the gear box output shaft.
