it probally wouldn't hurt to replace the filter, about all i know about diesels is that diesel and water, isn't a good combination, i have no clue about the filter, but congrats on the new truck!

Finally someone from the states who's still got a 350D(X). You've got quite a rare combination there, finding a 78-81 pickup that still has a 350 Olds diesel is not a common thing, never was (low production numbers) and especially after 23+ years. Most of those engines grenaded before their 10th birthday.

Anyway, what kind of a filter is it? I can't remember what year GM switched over to the square box style filter, but you probably have a round canister type filter (looks like an oil filter), check behind the intake manifold.

84 was the first year of the square fuel filter on the diesels.

The 350 diesels used a small rectangular filter mounted in the rear of the intake manifold, behind the injection pump. The fuel lines screwed into and out of the filter, kind of a pain to change. The 6.2L was introduced in 1982, and they had twin, spin-on filters, a large primary on the firewall, and smaller secondary on the back of the intake manifold. In 84, they combined both filters into a large, rectangular filter mounted on the firewall. I can't remember if the 350 diesel trucks had a dual filter system or not.

Good luck! Let us know if you get it running! And like Rock said, that's a rare truck. Most of those trucks had the diesels ripped out and an Olds 350 gasser put back in its place. Do us a favor and keep that diesel in there!

Casey
