Carb, Camshaft, and Timing

In the next month or so I'm gonna tear into my 305 V8 and get it running like new or better. I am buying a replacement carb, can i just get the Champion for $269 from Advance Auto Parts, or should i spring for the OE Rochester for $400? I don't plan on racing or dogging it, just driving. My timing is very bad also. The same time I replace my carb I plan on replacing my timing chain and gears. I guess i should chang timing set first since it requires taking almost eveything off the block? Or should i wait until i have a fresh carb on so it is more accurate? (gasps for air) My cousin said it is very possible my camshaft is worn also. I know THAT is hard to do since the cam is like in the block or on it or whatever. Any suggestions on that? Please follow my adventures with Ol' Red at my car domain site.

My advice if you have the money is to go with the edelbrock power package its not a racing setup but it will give you a better manifold and carb and camshaft all the parts are matched to work together.
Also the camshaft is easy to take out but it requires you to remove the manifold loosen the rockers remove the pushrods then remove all the lifters once you get there get you a cam tool or three good long bolts and rotate the cam out or pull slowly making sure not to nick the cam bearings and journals. inspect your cam for wear and decide from there.

Don't get the power package. The cam is old school and not great. Get a newer technology cam from a actual cam company. My .02

Well if you are going to throw your 2cents in atleast give an idea on a good setup that matches. also for a 305 that package would be more than sufficent..

Well i hope your not paying 400 bucks for it since a edelbrock carb is only in the 250 or so range.

You could have your carb blueprinted by Jet Performance for the cost of the rebuilt carb. I had that done a few years ago and I have been real happy. Summit Racings generic brand cams have the same timing specs as the Edelbrock for around $80.

If the 305 has a lot of miles I would be hesitant about throwing much money at it. I would fix whats broke and stop there. The 305s I have had were worn out at about 150-160K miles.

For the cost of a cam and carb ($350-$450) you could probably find a decent used 350.

Instead of the edelbrock performer I would sugguest somthing like a comp cams XE250H. The specs are: 206/212@.050 and .432/.444" lift.
