sooooo.. does it "free up" enough horsepower to make it with my while? not that 150 is too bad at all, but there any cheaper fans that still do the trick?

Sure are, run off to your local wrecking yard and pick up a set for like 30 bucks, and just buy / build a wiring harness for it, you'll also need a relay thats hooked up to a temp switch, which you can buy cheaply pretty much anywhere.
Probally get it done for under 100 bucks if you went the wrecking yard path. You can use electric fans from most any car if you did some fabbing to fit them up. Not sure which cars in specific is the one with the dual fans that fit perfectly (mine are from a 350 TPI Camaro, and are controlled by the ECM that will be in my truck to control my TPI) But there are a couple out there.

Here is mine, sorry...I couldn't resist.
When time and money allow, I wil be setting my truck up similar to Mikes, Spal fans are great and have a very good rep.

I guess it depends on how much air it moves, most often an electric fan moves more air than a stock fan, so, just a stab in the dark here, I'd guess that a single 16 would probally be fine...

Ford windstar fans are a good junkyard score and have a sroude on them that woulds pretty good on our radiators. Ford Taurus 2 speed fans are also not a bad junk yard score.

No. Don't have a shroud. Here is a very old pic of what they looked like right after I installed them. I have dolled everything up some since. I have a stainless steel cover over the radiator now, along with some other engine bay dressup stuff. The metal straps is what came in the kit I bought. They have two more on each fan at the bottom also. The fans sit right against the radiator. No shroud is needed anyway. Folks think you need a shroud with electric fans. This is something a lot of fan companys try to make everyone think. It's a way for them to sell cheap, underpowered fans. Folks will buy pretty before quality. You know?
