creased hood

On an otherwise rust free 79 Scottsdale, my hood has decided to fold (bend) in the middle especially near the outer edges where a small amount of rust was found. Are these hoods normally this weak or is it a hinge problem? Any feedback is appreciated.

The hoods are weak, but the problem is the hinges. Unfortunately the design of them allows them to become harder to close and create extra pressure on the hood at a weak point....

Yes this is a common problem. The hood was designed to fold up in the middle on impact in a crash. The problem is, whenever your hood hinges start to crap out on you and you continually try to close the hood against the unwilling springs it causes the hood to crease in the middle. So I would suggest either getting some new hood hinges. But before you go and buy any you might want to check and see if they are both straight because if they are off they will sway or bend and this can also cause that problem.

Its both. Around 75 they changed the disign to bend in a crash. theres a weak spot in the hood by disign. When the hinges dont get properly oiled this causes the hood to crease in the middle. I In am on my 3rd hood on my 78. In 1980 right when I bought my 78 a buddy asked a gas attendant to check the oil. big mistake he couldnt get the hood to close so he pull down instead of pushing in and bent the hood. I replaced that hood with a early model that was solid in the middle. when I had the truck repainted in 1992 that hood was replace because it rusted from the inside out. They sell stifners for these trucks. Best to keep the hinges oiled.

Yes oiled hinges are the best cure.

oiled / new hingers are good if your hood isn't already toast. I just replaced my hinges/springs, but my hood is already tacoed so it doesn't close flush in the back. Pretty much the only cure for that is a new hood unless you think you can bend it like beckham.

And whatever you do, don't get the so-called "hood braces" from LMC, they are the biggest waste of money on earth! How can a piece of steel you can bend by hand be strong enough to keep a whole hood from creasing?
