speedometer worn out?

the other day my speedo needle started bouncing and then it stopped working and now only works every once in a while but when it does the needle bounces all over? is it time for a new speedo or is it the cable or drive gears in the tranny?

Undo the cable at the transmission, & chuck the end of the cable into a cordless drill. Run the drill (I forget which direction, try both) while someone watches the speedo, & if it still screws up, it's the cable or speedo head. If it works OK, check the driven gear that the cable was hooked to. If it's OK, check the drive gear on the trans output shaft (it should not move on the shaft if you stick your finger in & try to move it).
