LMC Truck sells these "dash pad covers" that are made of plastic and fit directly over your existing dash pad, as the literature explains. has anybody bought/used these? Do they look good or tacky? They sell for about $50.

A lot depends on how your existing dash pad shape is. If your existing pad is lumpy then the fit of the cap will not be good. They certainly don't look as good as a new pad when installed.

barn9 recommended these awhile back and because of that I have bought 3 of them with good luck. One of them will be installed soon on my fathers truck when it gets back from being painted. It's a 5 minute job and looks great. JimKshorstep4x4 is right about starting with a fairly flat dash. I have seen the dash caps on ebay for about $30.

If the old dash pad is prepped right, they look great. The one I bought came with silicone to fill in the cracks, etc., as well as seal it down. Mine has been on almost 3 years, and is straight and nice, and not one person has noted it being a cover till I told them. Personally, I think they are tougher material than the original vinyl covering, and I like the look of it as well, because of the way it is textured. I'd use one again without hesitation.

Why use a cover?

You will pay 40 bucks for a whole new dash pad from Ricks.

Basically it boils down to preference and convenience. If it were an original resto then I would do a new pad. Otherwise the 5 minute deal works and looks great. Just my .02 cents

Yes true, if I were doing an all-out resto, I'd go with the dash replacement instead of just the pad. But one reason is I was reading an earlier post about how much trouble it is just to change out the dash pad, I figured if the cover looks almost as good, that's a better option for me.

Is LMC the only place I can get a cover?

I got the cover that's on my '72 from J.C. Whitney at least 8 years ago, and it's been in the Oklahoma sun every day since with no cracks, fading, or warping. If your dash is uneven underneath take a utility knife to it and straighten it out.

But, like others have said, this is a work truck. If I was doing a resto, the pads from the board vendors are very reasonable, if a pain to install.
