hi, new member with questions.
hello everyone.
im currenty looking for a 67-72 chevy/gmc 4x4 as a daily driver. i had a few older trucks and miss there caracter and style and simplicity. i love the bodystyle of this run,67-72,and want 4x4. what year did trucks start coming with all the emmission junk? i know here in calif anything below 74 i belive is exempt. ive been looking in the classic autotrader online and see a few 4x4s(many more 4x2)and they seem to range from 5,000 to 20,000+. i am prepared to spend up to 10,000 for a very nice one. as i am not as gifted as some of you are in the restoring process. so i need to get something that is already very nice...and add to that and keep it that way. what things should i look for as far as warning signs or what not? my plan is to purchese the truck here in so cal before i move back to minnesota, and drive it back. if i get a nice one will i have any problems driving the truck 2000 miles??? sorry for all the questions but hope you guys can help. thanks, mark |

Welcome from NorCal. Only thing I can answer about Calif. emissions is my 72 K20 had only PCV, charcoal canister, and intake snorkel. Pretty sure all 67-72s are now smog exempt.
A decent truck in good mechanical condition will have no more trouble with a 2000 mile trip than anything else, and probably none at all. These things are simple and reliable. Good luck in your search!

thanks for all the welcomes guys.

thank you guys for showing some trucks.....i really like that red 72 but i want a auto.
so trucks of this caliber im looking at...would you say they would only need small up keep? as opposed to a diff problem every time i turn around? someone asked were im located...in so calif. |

Welcome to the board. You came to the right place. (Heartbeat is a good place too though)
You are wise to want a truck from your area before relocating east. The trucks in your part of the world are what our dreams are made of. Personally, i would look for something that is some what close to stock. If it is mostly original, or stock style repairs, then you'll know what you are dealing with. If it is something that has been built from 20 different trucks, then there are many variables. I'm not dissin anyone's mutt truck (heck, look at mine) but I'm just saying for 10 grand, you should be able to get a very nice very original truck. In your area, I would demand a rust free body, and perferably original paint. I would rather get a rig that needs painting than one that was just painted....it is too easy to hide a junk body under paint. On the engine/drivetrain, I am a bit more flexable personally. What ever you want, hopefully it'll have. You said you want an automatic....don't let that kill a deal on the perfect truck. They can be easily swapped over to automatic, and then the truck could be exactly what you wanted. The engine goes the same way IMO, if it has an inline 6...who cares, you can slap a 400 small block in there in no time, or a 383 stroker, or what ever you want. Inside the truck is also a place where I like to see fairly stock stuff. An aftermarket wheel and maybe some accessory guages added are fine...even recomended IMO. (I don't trust 30+ year old guages) But stock style seats are a must for me, be it a bench or the much prefered buckets. Look under the carpet for rust, Even in Cali, if the truck sat for a year or two under a tree with the wing vent open, you could have some rot forming under the rug. What ever has been modified, you have to look real close to the quality of work. 4X4 trucks are commonly fitted with body and/or suspention lifts. Look at it real close, know your local laws concerning this, (including your planned new home state) and take it to a pro if needed. Find some one in your area who would be willing to go with you to look at it...perferably a ford or dodge guy...they will tell you why you shouldn't get it, and point out every stupid flaw in hopes to get you to go to the dark side. (that would be the ford or dodge camp) Read as much as you can on these boards if you are not real familiar on these rigs. The 4X4 pages should be packed with what is original, what is good, what is junk....ect. (I'm guessing...I've never clicked on the link) And feel free to ask us anything about prospective trucks. As far as dependability goes, you are dealing with a truck that is older than many of us on this board. Stuff will brake. However, a $10,000 truck should be pretty darned reliable, and when stuff does go wrong, it is normally a cheaper repair than a new truck, and in a pinch, you can always rig them to limp to the next exit. |

i feel the exact same as you...i would get some temp,gas,tach,volt,pressure gauges asap...as to monitor everything. what do you guys reccommend for easy to hook up gauges? ideally id love to have a 454 under the hood. i had a nice dark side truck lol(70 f250 camper special sport custom 2wd with a 460 semi-built) loved the bb power! i want stock apperance for the most part....im not personaly into low rider and flashy stuff on the these trucks. just my oppinion. thanks all for the replys. |

Big blocks present a challenge on these trucks. They were never sold with them, and there are a few mods needed to do it on a 4X4.
As far as guages go, even the cheap sun pro guages work great for a daily driver. There tachs, even as cheap as they are, are more acurate than most factory ones. |

so is it really hard to get a bb into these trucks?
i got my 70 f250 with the 460(466 acually)and it looked stock. do the fords take the bb easier then the chevys????? cuz id want one eventually i think. what need to be done to a 4x4 for one to fit |

I have seen pleanty of them with big blocks. My brother had one in his, but he replaced it with an affordable 350 while he builds the 454 back up. My 2wd blazer also had a big block in it, there are very few things that you will have to worry about. As far as i know, and remember they are very minimal.. Oh and my brothers truck is for sale for $5500. It has the 350, but would come with the 454 that needs rebuilt! nice clean truck for the price too. ill try and get some pics up@

Oh and this one is Sweet! IMO i think its way nicer then the red one! Who knows what it will go for. Definitly my choice, that or Dianes Blazer!
