Smile 283 ?'s

What years were they used in 67-72 trucks?
Does anyone have one that is working?
Just wanted to know if they were worth rebuilding.
Thanks
Matthew

They're great engines and will last forever. (just not much for low-end torque)

Matt, here is some info from a special edition of "Chevy High Performance" from May of 1999 that I have been holding on to. Pertaining to your 283..."these 283's were produced using the 327 tooling. This means they have extra-thick cylinder walls. You can usually bore them up to 0.155 inch over (4.030-inch bore, 306 ci with a 3-inch stroke). The cylinder walls on these desirable 283 blocks are dished to clear the 327 crank (plain 283 cylinder walls are perfectly round at the bottom)." Thats the good news, here is the bad new on the same page:...."there is no getting around the fact that a 283 just gives up too many cubic inches (and too much torque). Unless you're into nostalgia, restoration, or class racing, there is no real reason to build a 283 today"....end quote. There you go, thats "just the facts". Hope this helps. Joe Bob.

Put a 327 crank in it and you have a 307!

Again as everyone has already said, The 283 is as any Chevy motor.. A good block, but is best used in a lightweight vehicle.

Thumbs up I got one!

It runs great but like they all said, but its not going to make my 67 stepside any kind of a street racer!
Got some ideas for a six speed but I'll need you guys to help me out.
I'll start another thread to explain.
Bill
