Assembly instructions for a new wood bed??? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have about everything I need to start fitting together my new SWB wood floor bed. I have heard that the Assembling Your New Bed "pamphlet" that Chevy Duty and others are selling for $3-$4 is not very worthy.

Are there any good online directions/instruction that anyone knows of? Heck, I'll even pay for good ones. I am sure I can figure it out, but it would go much smoother I'm sure with good instructions right in front of me.

I did find ECE's article, but they didn't go in to much detail on assembly.

Ya gotta start with the outside boards first. I did mine all by myself and had to start over a couple of times......

I started in the middle and worked my way out. Just don't tighten the bolts until all the wood is in place. I had to move a few 1/8" or so.

Is there any assembly that can be started on the floor, then set the bed on the frame? In other words, do the cross sills attach directly to the bed sides, or does the wood go in-between?

Or does all the assembly have to be done on the frame?

My wood attached to the cross sills. The cross sills connect to the bed at the angle strips, through the outer board (at least on my stepside). Like if you looked from the top, the bolt goes through the angle strip, then the wood, then the cross sill, followed by the washer & nut.

Guess I left that part out. It is fleetside. Every part to assemble the bed is new.

I put the wood in without the cross sills to check for fit and mark holes to be drilled. Make sure you have the cross sills in the right way that the braces in the fender well fasten to or they won't bolt up. Good luck John
