is it the rear end???

when i put the trans(th350) in to drive it makes a very slight noise, but when I put it into reverse, it makes a loud clunk! I checked the u-joints and they seem to be good still. I do have quite a bit of movement in the drive shaft though.....about a 1/4 inch each way. I hoping that it's not a worn r&p, but I think it may be. any thoughts???? thanks

I've seen u-joints make lots of noise going into reverse...and that's quite a bit cheaper than messin with the diff. I'd start with new U-joints myself.
