Hello, I havn't done this but I think that the stock HEI ignition from an 80's inline six should fit the 292. I also have a 292 and I used a Pertronix Ignitor kit in mine. runs better than ever now and it still looks stock! The Ignitor is an electronic ignition that is just as good or better than an HEI and along with one of their 40,000 volt Flamethrower coils It runs great! good luck.

I installed a setup from a newer inline 6 chevy motor. A chevy 250 distributor I'm told will work great on a 292. This is the cheapest way to go. I got a new distributor from the local boneyard for $25.00 - it just drops right in the way the old one came out. You then run a 12 guage power wire to it from the ignition unfused terminal on the fuse box for power. That is the only wire needed - the old wires aren't even used.

Not sure if its the right one, but there is a 6 cylinder HEI for sale on the '67-'72 Parts Board.
