Compressor recommendation?

I've been hearing alot of people complaining about noisey units lately. What is a quiet brand that will do most jobs?. My bedroom is over top of the garage so I want something fairly quiet and reasonably priced. Thanks

I find the oilless compressors more anoying than the belt driven models. Just don't like the type of sound made by em. sounds like a Wagner power painter on steroids. I dunno about decible ratings. I have a Cambell Hausfield 60 gal vertical tank model. It is pretty loud. But I like it much better than the oilless I had. You mentioned reasonably priced.... You might try Northern Tool. They have a zero interest payment plan last I checked.

Do you usually run your compressor while you sleep? :p

Apparently if you run a pipe for the air pickup to outside the building it reduces the noise quite a bit, not sure though since I never tried it.

jim there arent really any quiet compressors. the best thing to do is put it in a box. build a wooden box around the compressor really cuts down on the noise. you could come look at how mine is setup if you wanted

Jason, I might just do that. I never heard of building a box for sound. As long as it don't get hot that sounds good.

I seen one the other day at the Tractor Supply, it was a 26 gallon / 5HP, oiler with a 3 year warranty that looked like a real good deal ($375.00). The thing that i liked about this one is that it is unusual for this small of a unit to have oil injection for the compressor, which I know will make the unit last longer....

Yeah you can build an insulated box around it with vents in the roof and walls and it will cut down the noise considerably. Just remember to have an access door for servicing

Use some polystyrene sheet as insulation inside the box and maybe also mount it on some rubber feet so it doesn't transmit as much sound/vibration to the floor. Alternatively why not build a home for it outside the wall with insulation and pipe the air in.

Im hunting an affordable horizontal unit that withstand sanding and painting... they hardly seem to make these anymore ?

Lock, They are made by several companies, its just that they dont sell them as much where most people shop because they are considered industrial units and the price usually reflects it. If there is a local tool seller that stocks some good verticle units ask them if they can order a horizontal one of the same brand. They just don't stock these things because they are large and expensive, but they can get them.

the box is built into the shelving in the garage not even really noticeable and its screwed together so the whole front panel can come off

I'm not sure what brand mine is since I got it in trade from another board member, but I believe the compressor is from Qunicy. It's a 220V 5hp single stage unit with a 60 Gallon upright tank. Like cable guy saidm there aren't any really quiet compressors from what I have seen. I sam going to use some cheap (used) office partion dividers to block it off to help cut down on the noise. I saw someone else do it and it seems to do pretty well without building a closet or seperat room for it.

Least with me, you sort of learn to live with it. Heck I get nervous if I don't have the noise/hear mine running. Normally means something is wrong.

I might be wrong here, but wasn't there an episode of HP tv, where they were plumbing the shop for air, and they talked about a muffler type device that they were putting on the air intake to make it quieter??? anybody know what i'm talking about?
