Will it Pass? (emissions)
I hate testing.... My Burb (Goodwrench 350) has started smoking upon (harder) acceleration lately. It doesnt smoke when idling that I can tell, and the emissions equipment is still all intact. Should I worry?
If the prognosis is bad, I have a shady fallback position. I can take it to a tester who will pass it under the table for $100, but dont particularly want to do this. Just need to decide on which tester to take it to, the $30 one, or the $100 one. Thanks |

Sounds like carb is out of adjustment or in need of a rebuild. Might try to tune ithe carb up before taking it to get tested

Its bluish smoke if that makes a difference, but I'll look into the carb rebuild. It was sitting unused for ~2 years before I brought it home. 160k miles BTW. Thanks for the tip

Just Got My '86 Inspected "exempt", Just Took The Old Insp. Sticker Off So They Didn't Know Last Years Mileage, Then Claimed "less Than 5000 Miles A Year", & I'll Be Damned If It Didn't Work.

yep. Honestly, I would go the $100 route if you don't think it will pass. Also, you can get a one year exemption if you spend more than $250 in repairs, and it still will not pass. It is on the TxDOT website with details.

I know this will sound weird but why not tune it up & try to do things legally first. Only go to the dark side if it won't pass. But.... don't change your oil until minutes before the inspection. Clean, fresh oil will help pass almost anything. My 93 5.0 Stang passed w/o a tune-up, 115K miles, & no cats/true duals. I simply changed the oil so there was no excess gas/HC's/Co's (pollutants) to be heated/burned. It's an old tip I learned from the guy that used to do my inspections. My vehicles were always an area of concern since I'm guilty of 'loosely interpeting' gov regulations .

I'd love to do it legally. Its a two hour drive and thrice the price to do it shady. But I think its the valve seals or rings and I dont have the time or money to repair them myself.
I like the idea of a quick oil change though. But how will that affect a smoking engine? Thanks for the tip! |

Clean oil doesn't have all the residuals vs. used oil . . .... especially oil that's subjected to leaky valve seats/gas.

Its an 86.
BTW, I just rebuilt the carb and replaced some vacuum lines. No more rough idle and backfires, but I need to have a pro tune the carb, (I got it pretty close). The engine smokes on startup and gives a puff when you jump on the gas, that means valve seals, right? How hard is that for a shadetree mechanic with no garage/tools? Do you have any friendly inspector contacts Scoti? Thanks |
