Wiper Motor/Washer Pump

Replaced wiper motor today. Initially the washer pump worked except it was sticking on so that when the wipers were running the pump was always running. I messed with it and it started to work like its supposed to. Now it won't squirt at all and the wiper motor has even seemed to slow down. What happened?

I don't know...however I can tell you that I had the same problem with my 71 3/4 Cheyenne. When I got the truck the wipers worked fine, but previous owners disconnected the washer. I hooked everything back up and the washer would spray, but now it wouldn't stop spraying!!!!!!!

I disconnected it and installed a universal pump on the inner fender and put an toggle switch on the lower dash. Now when I want fluid, I flip the switch and the pump work independently of the wipers.

Only problem is that the original pump still runs whenever I have the wipers on...so I guess it will eventually burn out, and I hope it doesn't damage anything (like the wiper motor) when it does.

The magnetic coil in the pump reset is not de-energizing or there is somthing dirty or bent on the preventing the reset arm from lifting off the magnetic coil. Try removing the cover and blasting the whole thing out with electrical contact cleaner (do not doe this when it is energized it could flash the cleaner). Als make sure there is a good ground from the washer pump motor to the firewall. This seems to be a common problem with GM washer pumps of the era. Brian
