305 V6 Common?
I called Jegs earlier this week to order an intake manifold to replace my cracked one. To my surprise, the operator said nobody makes a one for my 305 V6! I notice most here have V8 or I6 motors. Are the V6 motors that uncommon for early GMC's?
I'm having the manifold repaired, so no big deal. But I am somewhat concerned about parts availability for stuff I need specific to the V6. Last night, while eating far too much turkey, my brother-in-law indicated that many parts can be had from any 70's V6 car motor. I'm skeptical. John

That's news to me...far as I've always known a "305" was a smaller pistoned version of the 350. But yes, some GMC's did come with a V-6, not sure of the size, but I think it was a rare option.

305 is a very rare option. i don`t think you`ll find much on the aftermarket for one.

That GMC V6 is a whole different animal than the sbc 305. Look at this website.

Follow Sam's link to Jolly's site, lots of good info there. Heck, you might even find someone that likes that engine!
The GMC V6 was a completely different V6. Nothing at all like any other. Big, heavy, low speed, and would pull anything you could hook on to. It just wouldn't pull very fast. It had a huge crankshaft, huge rods, and it's balance was horrible. The gained a reputation, and about all that could be sold were to fleets. But someone in charge at GMC loved the engine. Whoever he was, I don't know, but he was about the only person that loved it. I drove a lot of GMC trucks in the late 60's to mid 70's. Most had either the 305, the 351 or the 478. They were okay for in-town delivery. The only GMC I ever liked driving that much had a 427, but by the time I was driving that one she blew a gallon of oil out on a 200 mile trip.

The 305/351 were not rare, but there aren't very many left today. If you see one in the wrecking yard, you need to think about getting stuff off of it, becouse your parts are going to be a PITA to get. Everywhere you go, you will be called a liar, and that there is no such animal, and that it can't be a 305...ect. Tell them to look in the books and not in the computer, and they may find the info, but even then, many places still won't have the info. Your best bet would to be finding a site that deals with the old V-6 engines (the jholly site above maybe) and find out what they do, and where they go.

You can get intakes fixed including cast iron

Yea, I'm having the manifold fixed now, so no worries on that. I just sort of wondered how easily I should expect to find parts. I'll drive the truck as it is and keep whatever "cool" factor might be associated with having an oddball motor. Too much grief and I'll throw in whatever will most conveniently fit.
