Tailgate support cable installation instructions
Here are the instructions that several members requested I post describing the conversion from metal tailgate support straps to cables. The pictures may not be in order but hopefully they still make sense. It will take two posts for all the pictures.

More work than I would have planned on doing...have to reconsider my previous thoughts, nice and clean work...thanks! Is there a way to accomplish this or something similar without cutting, drilling and tappint the "T"? I was going to try and figure out a way to use the T.

Jeff, I have the taps and grinders. Looks like an afternoon project if yo don't weld in the brace.
Mocwon: Would you be kind enough to list the hardware that you used on the bedside cable mounts? Trying to escape the 3 trips to the hardware store to do one project. Allmost forgot the kudos! Great write-up! Thanks. Rich

very nice job. Now why did you add the angle brackets? Is it for support? I was not sure why they were needed?

chickenwing: the hardware involved other than the Ford Ranger parts is a few washers and the nut and bolt. I didn't keep track of the sizes of the washers, nut and bolt. I just rummaged around through my stash until I found some that would work. Its easier if you already have the cable support so you can find a bolt with the right size head to fit in the hole and work properly.
custom 68: I added the angle pieces for support but I doubt if they are necessary. It's kind of a flaw I have, over-building. But, I know for a fact there will be greatly reduced stress at that point on the end of the bed since the load is now distributed over a larger area. sactoC10: I sure there are other ways to accomplish the same end result, this just happens to be what I ended up with. I can tell you the late model Chevy truck cables are too long plus millions were recalled by the factory for being prone to failure due to corrosion.
