While we're talking about oils...single weights?

What are everyone's opinions on running single weight oils? I figure they have less additives compared to multi grades. I'm wanting to run the cleanest oil possible in my new 400 when I have it done. Are single weight oils a thing of the past? Do they make single weight synthetics? What would be the advantages/drawbacks of running say 30w in the summer and 5w or 10w in the winter?

just don't put any synthetic when you are braking it in, if u do, good bye camshaft and lifters

Don't worry, I don't plan on doing that. I was thinking about breaking it in on 30w or 40w Rotella dinojuice. Any thoughts on that as well?

I would use 30W straight. Yes there are single weight oils. Only use them if the temperature is really close to constant. I would not use a single weight for the winter. A multigrade is better. Easier to start with the lighter side but need the thickness once the engine is hot and running.

I use straight 30W all year long with no problems, but it rarely gets below 20*F. around here. I've had 10W30 start thinning out at 2000-2500 miles, so I prefer not to use multi-grade oil. You have to watch out for the cheap straight-weight oils that have a service rating of SA or maybe SB, and are only useful if you need to make an oil slick for some reason. Good modern oils will have a rating of SG or higher.

I will probably end up running full synthetic, but I was just looking for a good oil to break the engine in with and use for the first 3000 miles or so. I'm thinking 30w Rotella would be the best. I'm sure they have the latest service rating, which I think IIRC is up to SL now.
