'63 c60

My next door neighbor has a '63 c60 cab and chassis that has a flat dumping bed on it. This truck seems to be a little bigger than what is normally covered on here but I need some help. He wants $3500 for the truck. I would say it is in good to very good condition. It has the 292 6 with a 4 speed tranny and 2 speed rear. There are no fluids leaking, runs good, tracks well going down the road and stops real well. The tranny seems loud in the lower gears but that may be normal with a 8.72 / 6.40 rear ratios. The tranny is normal going down the road.

Any advice / information would be appreciated.

If it's in good condition and you need or just plain want a truck that big, I'd say it's a fair deal. You can probably find cheaper trucks out there but they generally aren't going to be in real good shape. Getting one that's roadworthy can save a lot of money up front. As the size of the truck goes up, the size of the parts bill goes up too. If you consider what you'd pay for a regular sized truck in good to very good condition and then add in that this one could haul that regular sized truck it puts things into perspective. Besides, big trucks are cool!

Like Bob said, if you want or need a big truck that's not a bad price, especially if it's in pretty good shape. If the cab is not all rotten and everything works that would be a fair price around here. The dump bed probably adds 1,500-2,000 to the value. I wish I had a dump bed for my C80. The one thing you might check is the wheels and tires. Some of the 20 inch 2-piece wheels they used back then were so dangerous to mount tires on that they became known as "killer wheels", and lots of tire shops won't even fool with them anymore. They also had 22.5 inch tubless wheels and tires available too. I ran across an old truck the other day that had 7.00x22.5 tires on it, which would be almost impossible to find today. Hell, that's a good looking old truck. You don't see many in that shape anymore. 1963 is my favorite year, too. Some fresh paint and she'd look like new. That does look like 20's on it, but I can't tell if it's killer wheels or not. Looks like it's still got plenty of rubber on it though, so you probably wouldn't have to worry about it for a while anyway. Looks like all the glass is good, and man that cab is strait! Wish I had the money to play with, I wouldn't mind having it if you don't take it. I could use that in my business(LOL).

The rubber is good. It does have the 20" wheels and I believe they are 2 piece. It appears the center wheel is riveted to the outer wheel. Are these the "killer wheels"?

Should they be changed?

I'd pay $3500 for that, you don't see cabs like that up here in the salt belt. Nice lookin' truck! If they are split rims I wouldn't worry about them until it's time to get new tires, then take it to a shop and see what they say about it.

If you can't see a removable lock ring on the front wheels(the rear wheels would have them facing each other) then it could be the bad ones, but I certainly wouldn't let that stop me from getting the truck. If the tires are OK, you may never have to worry about it. It's just something good to be aware off. If you do get it, and you ever have a tire go flat, I would not try to air it up, that's when they're dangerous to blow apart. Get someone who knows how to mess with them. She sure is a clean truck though, and I'd love to take her home. It had to be taken care of. The cab looks as good as my C80 firetruck cab that spent the first 35 years of it's life in an insulated building, only taken out for fires and parades. Have any more pictures?

That C60 does look nice. My family had ones years back for their garden center (same color even) but it had a rack body on it. They are rugged trucks and of course the 292 is a beast and 1/2 but don't expect to go very fast with it. If you plan on really using the truck or really want one I would grab it since like they said the big trucks are not easy to find in decent shape or at all. And remember when someone usually sells a newer well-used WORK truck there is usually a reason he is getting rid of it no matter how CHEAP it may be. You usually find that out later after you start dumping money hand over fist into it. Then you still have an uninterseting piece of crap. But at least with a NEAT vintage truck in good looking shape it will hold it's value for what it is. Even if you have to put a few bucks in it to use it and have it be reliable. Anything else is only worth how new and how little work it needs.
And those earlier trucks are simple and fairly easy to find parts 4.
And YES those rims did explode. Maybe have them checked before you really start using it if you get it. GOOD LUCK....Ed.

May want to check it out some a little closer because from the front grill it looks like a 62. But man it sure looks in Great shape, I would have bought it for sure. Something to drag the ol Model N tractor around with.

Nice truck for the money, especially one that dumps. The 292 is one of my favorite engines. In a truck, I prefer one over a 283 V-8. If you want more power and good sound, put a straight thru muffler on it, if it don't already have one. Keep us posted.
