Talking what i did today

these are pics of what i did today. very straight forward, i read longhorn man's write up and i thought it would be more difficult but it was done in 45 minutes, and that was only because i didnt have the donor piece from the truck for the horn so i had to sodder (sp?) the wire to the spring, but all works

Sweet...I just have one question.... WTF is the red thing covering where your ignition switch goes?

The wheel kicks ass doesn't it? Pulls it away from your chest a little, and is WAY more comefortable.

its a start button out of a Hond@ S2000. i turn my key to the auxiliary position then the button lights up (it says 'ENGINE START') and i push the button the ignition i made a bracket for and is moved under the dash. you can see the key hanging in the red square. the turn signal lever is close to the wheel, if i would have known that i would have taken it off and done a little 'adjustment' to it to have more clearance but it all works.

interesting indeed.
As for the turn signal...I never really noticed that. I wonder if the PO might have bent yours back a little.

i can barely fit my finger between the wheel and the lever. are the wheels you used the same as this one??? maybe they have a different dish to em. this one measured 4 1/16 from rim to base. my original was 5 3/4

I'll take another look at how bad mine is tomorrow since I haven't looked at it for 6 months. I'll let you know tomorrow about your old wheel. Thanks, Mark

68w/sbc406- the gauge you put in the dash did you use a hole saw to cut the hole? I am a little afraid of cracking something. My hole saw is for wood got some pretty big teeth.

yeah it was a hole saw for wood. just go slow and it will mostly melt though. then i needed to take a flapper wheel and a die grinder and make it bigger cause the hole saw i had was a little too small. and if it cracks, i have seen these particular clusters go for like 15 bucks on e bay. thats my water gauge, i got the oil presure on the other side

I like your start button. I was thinking of doing the same thing on my truck. Guess I can't be the first now. LOL Did you use the original ignition switch under the dash? Was it easy to wire up? How much was the switch?

I noticed it on the new Viper engined Dodge Ram and liked the idea.

It sounds like your lever has been bent. I can't recall exactly how much room I had, but it was more than that.

Nice shop table. Me likes Goats...

Thanks for the write up/pics...will be useful. I had a the same clearance problem with the turn signal on a plain-old Grant wheel. Pretty stock truck, don't think the lever was tweaked previously.

yeah it is the orininal switch under the dash, i bought a relay so i would run all the starting juice through the button, then i cut the wire that runs to the starter (purple if i remember) so that the original couldnt start it and it was simple. the 4 wires were IIRC a switched power, a wire to the botton, a ground and to starter. i think the button was 38 bucks, but that was with my moms discount. the hardest thing was finding something that would plug onto the switch and finding which prongs i needed to hook to (it doesnt come with a diagram) radio shack had some stuff for plugs.

that car needs some help bad!!! i love that thing but my parents cant afford to do what they want to it so they havent done anything to it it has a 400 with a M22 and a rock crusher rear end (dont know much about rear ends but have heard those are d@mn good) we have factory front disc brakes for it in the cabnets. but the PO (my bio-dad) was a %$#@%#@$% (but thats a whole nother board in its self) had the trunk sand blasted and didnt clean out the rocker panels so sand soaks up water and....well this car doesnt have rockers anymore, or floor boards for that matter. motor was rebuilt 7 years ago, but has since sat there cause my step dad (my real dad) is kinda lazy and hasnt done a valve adjustment so he can start it again after he had the rad re cored and a new water pump added.
o its a 67 if you couldnt tell

Anyone know what a good diameter and backspacing is for a 72 without tilt? I was thinking of a wheel that is about 14" with 3 3/4" dish, but if it interferes with the turn signal arm I won't bother. I suppose there is also the shifter to worry about too. I will be switching to a billet shifter too, whether that makes a difference.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33703

That's the shifter I'd be using with that wheel.

well that wheel has a dish of a little over 4 inches, not sure about the diameter, i didnt check that. as far as the turn signal, just bend it a little, and i cant help you with the auto shifter, i dont have one

Yeah, when you remove the wheel, you'll see there is one screw holding the turn signal lever on. you can remove that and bend it a little to make it straight instead of bent towards you, or if you wanted, you could even put it on backwards and have it so you'll never accidently hit it...but I wouldn't know why you'd wanna do that.
