Exhaust question

I have a dumb question.. How come I dont ever see anyone coat their exhaust system? Would it not prolong the metals life? Does the metal need to breath or what? Would anyone care to explain?

Size mainly. Some of the big boys coat their systems, but they have to build them so they are comprised of smaller pieces which can be rejoined together after they are coated.

i painted mine with exhaust paint after i got it all fab'd up and then slid it in and bolted the mufflers on. the pipes don't get as hot as the headers so the paint will stay on.. but i sandblasted mine first to prep.....
