where i work there is a 1972 k20 350/sm465 the steering box just started leaking. i know nothing about the boxes themselves, is there a way to save the old box or do i need to get a new one?

Yes they are different. The arms are in different index and they are not interchangable. If you take them apart and swap parts they are but you can rebuild the one you have. If you do a search it has been talked about on here b4.

If the K20 is the same as my K10 (probably?) and your leak is around the Pitman arm or the steering input shaft, the leak will be easy to fix. Pull the box, buy the seals at your local auto parts store, make sure you have an internal snap ring plier on hand, and stick them in. I did this on mine a few years ago and drove it until the box got loose. Then I stuck in a reman rather than trying to rebuild.

The boxes are the same EXCEPT for the sector shaft, if you are careful you can pull the 4 bolts and pull straight up, be sure the box is centered and do not touch the center bolt. However a rebuilt box is about 175. with a warranty.
