May have found one...what is this truck worth? DROVE IT!

Local truck, 1972 K20 4x4 Cheyenne, Camper Special. 4 speed, 350 v8, wood bed. Has tilt wheel, but looks like from auto truck. In dash tach.

Had a look around the truck today. Rockers look good from underneath. One cab corner bad, and some cab supports bad.

Guy said the truck was a project of his about fifteen years ago. Restored it using two different trucks. Not much surface rust at all. One door has bad corner -- rusted through.

He was thinking $3,500. I'm thinking pretty good price. What do you think?

Where are you? Around here if I were going to give that much it shouldn't have much if any rust. It's gonna be really hard to answer without your location, and pics, lots of pics. But you gotta remember opinions are like a-holes, everybodies got one and they all stink!

Gear Ratio? Rear End type? AC? Orignal Motor or transplant? Saddle Tanks? Tool Box? DETAILS & PICS young Jedi.... Give us the Details & PICS...

its a LWB...no swb 3/4 tons. stock would be the 465 tranny...but I have seen the 420 swapped into newer trucks.
I agree though, need to see some pics.

Guy said come have a look, so I grabbed my flashlight and nosed around. It was sitting at his business and locked, so couldn't get inside. Did not get chance to drive.

Yes, LWB. Not sure on gear ratio, of if it has the 420 or 465 (how do I tell?). No saddle tanks or tool box.

Only exterior rust I can see was the driver's door and some minor surface rust here and there. Got underneath and rockers look very solid and very good. About the only thing I noticed that was rusted through were the cab supports and one corner. Fenders looked good from underneath the truck, light surface rust.

Truck does have AC and vents inside cab, but no condencer hooked to engine. Does have the AC radiator that sits just behind grill and in front of engine radiator.

Has alum rims and BFG mudders (I could take em or leave em)

I'm in northwest Missouri. All the trucks I've seen up this way either have lots of rust or the owner wants lots of $$$ for them.

My secretary's husband works for this guy. Said the truck was restored about 15 years ago and looked fantastic. He put a snow blade on it about 5 years ago and uses truck to plow his small parking lot at business (about 15 spaces total). Truck sits in machine shed most of year, used in winter when it snow. Plow is on truck now, secured to frame. Bolted on.

If I could magically create a truck it would be 71 K20 4x4 with manual tranny. The tach, tilt, AC, nice rims/tires are all icing on the cake. No pics...didn't think it would be cool to be nosing around his truck after hours at his place of business snapping pics. Hope to drive this weekend.

If it's a 420 the reverse is left & down. My 67 K20 came from NW Missouri and it has a bit of cancer too. What kind of lock hubs does it have?

Offer him 3K and see what he says You can't beat a bad @$$ 4x4! Just my guessing opinion, but if the rockers are good but the supports are bad....they might have been replaced when he did the rebuild???....or they may have bondo Sounds like a sweet deal though.

Redneck: Yep, the supports have bondo on them. Everything else under the cab looks original. More I look around the more I think this is a pretty good deal.

Americanrider: Not sure on hubs. They look aftermarket, not original.

When you say he used 2 different trucks to build it you may want to check the frame, vin and title #'s and make sure they all match.

Sounds decent to me being from Missouri and how most trucks that age look. I dont think you can buy one and not expect some rust and things to work on for 3000 bucks. The cab mounts, windshield area, and rust up along the cowl area would get my attention. Pull the carpet away from the dimmer switch area on both sides of the truck and check the floor out there. Is the frame decent or really rusty?

Drove the truck today and had chance to talk to owner and nose around more. Here is what I've found:

Truck is engine and body from 2 wheel drive camper special. Lost of options (AC, mouldings, tilt, tach, etc.). Rolling frame from 3/4 ton 4x4. About 15 years ago he restored the camper special (had rockers and cab corners done) and put on the 4x4 chassis. Said titled as a two wheel drive truck.

Rockers look excellent for age. Cab corners will have to be re done. Rusted through floor board on driver's side. Passanger side looks good.

I can only see one flaw in exterior sheet metal...small dent in lower bed behind rear wheel. Aside from that this is a very straight truck. Doors will need to be replaced. Rusted out corners. Fenders, bed and cab look good to me.

Cowl looks great and unpainted original. One of the inner wheel wells is rusted through in small spot down by PS.

Engine started and ran strong. Transmission shifted well. TRansfer case shifted and 4x4 worked in hi and low range. Tach and spedo worked. Showed about 3,500 RPM pulling 50 MPH. Judging from sound of engine I think tech is off by just a litttle.

Heat worked well. AC not hooked up (no condencer)

Only problem I could find was the parking brake. Said he put a line lock in to act as parking brake. When I stopped the rear brakes had trouble letting go after you let up on the pedal. That will have to be addressed.

He said $3,500 for truck AND blade. Said he would take $500 off if I didn't want the blade. So I'm looking around $3,000 -- may be able to talk him down a little because of the brake issues.

That's my story. Any thoughts?

Sounds like a decent deal. I think you should be able to go down a bit more. You will have some immediate maintenance issues with the brakes. Since it has rarely been driven you may have a thing or 2 pop up once you start using it regularly. Make sure you give yourself a bit of a cushion finance wise. I think all around it sounds like a good deal though.

With it registered as a 2wd you wouldn't ever be able to sell it outside your state, Alot of states check frame #'s to title and vin. If you need any body parts I got alot and I'm not to far from you. Good luck, Thanks Randy

If the tach is electric it's most likely not wrong. My guess would be a faulty speedo due to bigger tires/different rearend/different trans/different dash/different cable etc... you were probably going 55-60 ...but it could be the tach.... If the truck is a 4x4 "mutt" I'd offer him 2,500 without the plow. Good luck!

Where I come from that is a $2500-$3k truck. Your not getting a phenomenal deal, but your not getting screwed either. Happy Truckin'!

since it has a plow mounted up, i'd take a good look at everything under the frontend of the truck. i know some people who plow intelligently, and I know some that plow like they are in NASCAR. looks nice though.

I hear you. Buddy of mine plows for a living. He's hard on vehicles. My secretary's hubby works for guy who owns this truck. Says he only uses to plow his parking lot. Nothing more. I'm pretty confident he's not hammered around on this thing. It drives tight.

other than checking out the frame as stated before it looks like a great truck for the price...but I'd still try $2500ish

Update: Talked to the guy who does much of the work on this guy's truck (local mechanic). Said brakes shouldn't be too much of an issue. Explained a few things and I'm comfy with his answers.

Secretary's husband who works for this guy said he had an offer on the truck yesterday for $3,200. He turned it down.

That said, I called and we talked price. I said "$3,500 with the blade...take off $500 for the blade, back to $3,000."

His reply: "no, when we first talked i said $3,500. That was for truck without blade."

We went back and forth for a while. He talked about the $3200 offer to me. At that point I felt it was time to pull the trigger and said okay to $3,500.

I would have loved to pay 3k, but I'm getting the truck I want (3/4 ton, 4x4, stick shift, 350 v8), and don't have to do any major swaping of tranny, axles, etc. Body and bed are in great shape compared to other trucks i've seen around (listen to me rationalize paying an extra 500 )

Bottom line is I'M STOKED! I'll be rolling around town in a 72 for a while...then tearing her down and building her back up!

Many thanks to all who gave me great feedback! I've learned tons of information in the short time that I have been nosing around here. This place is great. I look forward to swapping parts, talking trucks and posting lots of pictures of my project. When I pick her up I'll take a ton of pics and post them.

Thanks again, Daubs

Knowing the trucks around here, I think you did alright. You wont find em like that very often. If you didnt get it someone else would. Just be prepared to spend some cash on it and you will have a great truck.
