Harmonic balancer swap tonight
Im doing the balancer swap tonight. I want to make sure that I am not missign anything. I have a puller and installer.
Removal: Mark where the balancer is. Using puller to remove the balancer and key Install: Put a little grease on the seal in the timing chain cover /crank seal Use the installed to press the balancer on. Install the key into the crank (how far do I go in with that key? Will it just stop?) With flexplate blocked torque the balancer bolt to 65 lbs. Ok did I miss anything? There will be pics on this one Thanks

Iv'e always installed mine with the key already in the crank it helps keep the balancer lined up in the proper orientation.

Ok. Should I replace the key since I am in there? Or leave the original one in place?

I always replaced them,(my personal preferance) but if your key is good, then there's no reason not to reuse it

I use a 6" long piece of 2X4 laying across the front of the balancer and tap the 2X4 with a hammer to seat it in place before installing and tightening the bolt. You may HAVE to do this, The bolt may not be long enough for the threads to start grabbing without the Balancer seating in some. DO NOT HIT THE BALANCER WITH THE HAMMER..and don't hit it on the outside edges.. |

Ok the old one is off. The key looks like its ok so I am going to leave it alone. Here is a pic of the old balancer. The rubber on the back ofthe old one is very dry and is peeling off in some places. The rubber on the timign chain seal looks good on the inside. Time for the new balancer to go on.

What are you using to re-install it?
I gotta put a balancer on, but I cannot find a tool for it anywhere... I've heard about people making their own balancers, but I've never seen any pictures, and descriptions don't always work so well, lol

A potential source for an harmonic damper installer/puller.
Skokie, maybe you can take a pic of yours in action.

You can hone out the inside a little with a brake cylinder hone to get it to fit.

Well all in all it wasnt to bad. I will post the pics tonight when I get home. I took another look at the original balancer and it was pretty shredded on the back side. Also it kinda looked warped and after thinking on it a bit I may know why. Since I have the new blanacer on and the timing tab is maybe 1/4 inch from being flush from the balancer. On the original the timing tab was maybe halfway across the timing tab. So I dont think it was pressed on fully to begin with. But hey I could be wrong.
Guys thanks for all the help I greatly appreciate it. I am going to finish the job tonight and hope for the best. If I cant get it on the rest of the way then the machine shop guy I spoke to this morning said that he would take care of it and cheap to. Maybe I should have asked him to install it in the first place HAHHA
