I have a 68 C20 that I have some big plans for. I also just scrapped out a '85 Suburban. I know I need the front crossmember, suspension, and steering to do the conversion. How about the brake booster? Has anyone used a 73-85 booster on a 67-72? It looks like it can be made to work without too much work. I also robbed the tilt column. I see lots of reference to using van columns but nothing on retrofitting a newer tilt column. Can this be done? It looks like dimensions are close also.

Did you keep the rear axle cause your gonna need it to match the front.. The front crossmember is an easy bolt in affair...

The crossmember on my 70 wasn't changed. The 75 a-arms I used just bolted right up. The crossmember can be used, just trying to let you know it is not always neccessary. The newer tilt will have the key on the column, which is not needed on an older truck, so I would grab a van tilt just to make things easier.

Another reason to use the van column is the outside diameter of the 73/87 column jacket is too large to fit properly in the earlier truck. The key on column leads to the ignition switch being located on the column which is quite far for the original wiring harness to adapt. As stated above the VAN column is the best choice.

I love the front end of the '68's. I think it's one of the most attractive years out of the bunch.

I saved the rear for my '94 . I am going to return my '94 back to stock cause I can't stand to give all my goodies away when I sell it. I just grabbed the column because it was there and I can always sell it. What year van columns will work? I am not looking to keep it original so I'm not afraid of some adaptation. I am going to do some pretty drastic mods to it with a healthy 454, shortened to shortbed size, 9" ford rear disc rear, and a big drop... but drivable still. Any thoughts on how much drop I can do on the front and still get some kind of ride? The back is no problem cause I will be doing major work back there anyway. I want something on the lines of the '66 ford I did years ago, but it had a body drop.
