Door solenoid location
Hey Guys,
In one of the first 5 issuses of Project Old School they did a tech article on 1 piece windows & power door locks(shaved handles). They had mounted their solenoids at the very bottom corner of the door, and you can see the 4 bolt heads. This would be fine if I was going to cover the whole inner door, but I like it how it came factory. I'm planning on shaving the doors on my truck, and want to mount these solenoids up higher somewhere behind the inner door panel. Have any of you guys did this, and where did you mount yours? Also would mounting the "poppers" in the lower rear bottom corner of the cab(closest to bed) be the best place to mount these? How hig could I mount them without them interfering with any of the inner mechanical working parts in the doors? P.S. after locking my truck up in a parking lot I spend about 5-10 mintues(no joke lol) just pulling on the door handles, and pushing in on the button constantly. This is so I will quit doing this & to the clean up the exterior at the same time. I even attract some people that think i'm breaking into my own truck too. TIA, David

Funny, I just turn the key on the handle & mine is locked, takes maybe 10 seconds. Maybe yours need graphite?? You could weld a bracket to the inside of the door to hold the solenoids, then finish the weld on the inside. Also do not put push buttons between cab & bed, the truck flexs & your doors will pop open going thru a driveway. Seen it on a 71. Brian

I made a bracket for my solenoids that welded right onto the new door latch. worked fine. I hated installing the poppers in the bottom corner, didn't seem to have enough oomph either. I'd look for something different if I were to do it again.

Hi Guys, thanks for the replies.
Ths door shuts great on the first try, just I got a bad habit with messing with the handles & buttons. I need to go pop the inner door panel off, and see what places I can mount the solenoid. The popper i'm not sure on myself either, cause the new weather stripping makes the door pop outwards nicely when the door is being opened. But unsure if the popper wil tweak the bottom corner of the door, or will even pop the door at all. I didn't realize this but I do have to run wires into the doors to power the solenoids. Where's the best spot to drill a hole from the door into the cab, also the cab is double walled, how should I route the wires through this section? TIA, David
