Inside Sterring column ???'s

what is in the inside of an automatic steering column besides the steering shaft, wiring harness and shifting hardware? i want to mount a tach to the column, but i dont want to use a hose clamp. i was thinking of drilling and tapping thread into the column body and mounting it that way. has anyone tried this before? will i have enough clearance to drill and tap with out damaging the internals of the column? any other feedback is welcome. thanks. i just want a cleaner install without the hose clamp, am i

Just take out one of the screws that hold the netural safety switch and check it for lenght. Nothing you can hurt by drilling there. (use sheet metal screws like the switch--no tapping this way)

ok, i will take a look at it, hopefully it will be as easy as i anticipate. should also be a cleaner looking installation. thanks if it works i will have pics.
