Big Block Casting Codes - Can someone tell me
what they mean?
This is on a buddy's 454. It's a core motor. Just wondring if it was anything special. 3999289 GM10 H 14 74 09TSK CF 072 3 I assume the 1974 means it's a 1974 model, right? What does the other stuff mean? Thanks! Josh

My book says:
3999289: 1972-78 454 215, 235, 240, 270, 2 bolt, car & truck. I will assume that 215, 235, 240, and 270 are the hp ratings. Can't help for the rest of the numbers.

3999289 == 454, 270 HP ( '72 Corvette?)
Not sure what the other stuff means.

Thanks for checking guys. He wants $400 for it. I'm a little leary about buying it. It was in a mid 80's chevy truck but he was pretty sure someone swapped it into the truck. He said that it belonged to a friend and that they heard a bunch of noise and the the truck stopped moving but the engine kept running even with the noises. They quickly shut it off. The motor was later pulled and that's how it sits. He said that they've noticed that the flywheel is cracked? I'm looking for a builder. Maybe if the motor had come off as having more of a performance potential I would feel better about chancing my money. Could have a broken crank or worse. Who knows.
Thanks for your time.

That cracked flywheel could have been all the noise was. I've seen them make terrible racket before especially if it is cracked thru where the torque converter bolts on and lets the converter float around. It probably cratered the front pump in the trans and that would be why it quit moving. There is a good chance the motor is OK.

Hmmmmmm.....
It might just be worth picking up. I can't imagine it would stay running with a broken crank? Quote:
