stay stock or go custom look
Do you like the stock factory look or the custom street rod look? I guess it all matters on what you have to start with. Custom look seems a cheaper route to go, stock look seems like it could break the bank. These parts sure aint cheap. There seems to be different grades of replacement parts. From China to NOS parts.I want to have the stock look ,I just feel that if it isnt original equipment (NOS) that the restored truck might as well be made in China. My truck is a driver so I am buying the cheaper grade replacement parts. It seems to look good to others as I am redoing things, I just know it isnt the real McCoy.Will the value increase with cheap replacement parts? or would the value be just as equal going with a custom look?

Frank I went through the same delemma when I did my 71 super. The reality of the matter is sometimes there just isn't a NOS piece available. I even went to work at a dealership to get an "inside line" on some parts.... sometimes it worked sometimes it did not. There are still parts I find from time to time and wish that the truck was still apart. Long story short, get all that you can get NOS if money is not an object or the truck is going to sit (mine does- it's been driven maybe 12 times since it was complete), regardless NOS is only NOS until it is used then it is just another used part. If you are going to drive the truck get parts you can stand to get damaged and used. If not you are going to think "crap that idiot just dinged a NOS 72 door and insurance don't care if it is NOS or Reproduction". Learn from my mistake and enjoy your truck. Harold

if you have some rare big block 2wd shortbed super with bad ass options then i would say dont ruin a truck that could bring in some coin for originality. but if you start out with a 250, sm465, LWB fleet, 2wd 1/2 ton i say customize it. who would want one of those all factory besides CPNE???

I like both,so I will prolly get a restofication in the end.lol
Mostly stock looking body, and some nice mods in the engine, suspension area.I would also like a nicely done interior, prolly stay with a bench seat though, cause I don't like buckets in a truck. Whew! got a long way to go

68,That's where you're wrong, CPNE has even said he wants a 292, not a 250, LOL!

Me personaly if it is some highly optioned or rare model i would say leave it intact and do a resto on it, maybe change just some cosmetic stuff(wheels etc...) to your liking.
I have been thinking about this off and on for a while as my truck is supposd to have the Highlander option and has air(not working), power steering, brakes, tilt, but original trim and seat and what not are gone so it is not really an intact truck. But i guess it would be suitable for a restoation. Been thinking if maybe it would be better to sell to someone who wants a truck like that and get me something else, as i am not interested in restored vehicles. And i really don't want to cut something up(dash allready cut) that someone else would loved to have restored or something.*shrugs shoulders* eh, who knows. I hate to see like when on Monster Garage or American Hotrod or something they cut something up that i feel should have been left alone cause it was rare or in excellent shape. |

custom street. i can't live without modern ameneties, so i've decided to go full custom with my nearly-all-original truck. i don't like in 1968, i don't want to drive a vehicle that looks like it's from 1968.

That's the nice thing about these trucks, there are so many different ways to build them. My last truck was a full custom so I am doing my current truck as as more of a restification.

OK, on a more serious note, keep it stock (for the most part) but add custom wheels (save the original ones though) and maybe drop a slightly built up engine in it. This way if you're unsure you can always change it back. Also, a 3 inch drop can be changed back too as long as you save the parts, someone here will buy the parts from you if you decide that you don't like them.

my truck had the old school look when I got it. It has a unity spotlight, dealer add on cab lights, dealer add on air horns mounted over the driver cab.a dealer add on hood spear.I guess it would be oldified instead of modified. The rest is pure stock. I really would like a different truck to modify. This one would probably hold more value remaing stock looking. My neighbor has a 67 C 20 that he is doing a flame job on the paint.custom guages, custom is cool also.

Why do so many people seem to think that stock trucks bring more money than customs?
I mean i guess if you had a perfect condition never driven truck that you paid $3,000 back in 1967 you might be able to get $10,000 -$20,000 for it if you found the right buyer but ive seen customs sell for $50,000 + (granted they probably have just as much if not more invested in them). So i guess my question is why do so many people think that an original truck is more valuable? I mean its not like these trucks are rare or something. |

My thought is that stock trucks will always be popular, while customs are more affected by trends. Not to say customs can't bring in the big bucks, but a nicely optioned stock vehicle will always be worth something. On the other hand there are so many of these trucks out there, do whatever. Its your truck, and if the price is right it will sell custom or stock.

Depends on your definition of custom.
I'm sure the word "custom" was uttered out the mouth of the guy that butchered this one. |

I really dont think that stock trucks bring more $$$. It has always been told to me from collectors to keep a classic original ,but they were talking about cars I guess.Example : 57 chevy .Original 57 chevy Valuable. Modified or customized 57 Chevy not as valuable unless you do a Casper design and sink a lot of green into it. Our class of trucks 67 - 72 really doesnt seem to apply to that rule, they seem to still be collectible even after being modified.I like them all , they are in a class of their own.
