power steering pump?
I've got the origional 402BB in my truck with the origional powersteering pump which is leaking. It's the kind with the separate reservoir on the left front inner fender and a hose goes from the reservoir to the pump.Where can I get a new pump or what do I need to do to fix the problem? I've already tried stop leak and it didn't work. Thanks everyone.

I don't have a big block pump, but my small block pump was leaking on my blazer and I bought a rebuild kit from NAPA and rebiult it. Had the new bushing pressed in, but did the rest myself. Is this a possiblity for the big block pumps?

The pumps themselves are the same, only the reservoirs are different. Remove the whole thing, take the fitting off the back and the nuts holding the studs and remove the pump from the front. Replace all the o-rings and re-assemble.

leaking pump
You need to check the solder joint around the nipple for the large reservoir hose on the pump. I've had a bunch of these pumps over the last few years and 8 out of 10 will leak there. Most of the time the joint will look good even though it leaks. You should remove the pump, plug all the line holes, fill with fluid and let it sit over night to find all the leaks.
Autozone has the pumps for $57 or seal kits for $10. Another thing to watch out for is when you are installing the large reservoir hose back on the pump not to push too hard against the nipple. This can break the solder joint. Put some PS fluid in and around the end of the hose to make it go on easier. |
