Heater duct; what tape to use?
Hi all,
I recently installed a heater/defroster from vintage air (just a heater, no air conditioning). Because of the difference in size of the duct coming out of the heater to the larger duct needed for the defroster vents I am using two different sizes and I need a way to keep them together where one hose ends and the other begins. I tried duct tape but it just burned right through. I next tried some heater hose wrap tape that worked for a little bit and didn't melt but it won't stay stuck to the ducting. Any idea on what tape to use? |

Locate a dealer for residential heater/AC parts and supplies, or a local HVAC contractor. They use a tape that is similar to thick aluminum foil with a really strong adhesive for various ductwork issues. The roll I have is about the same size as a role of duct tape, but it comes with a peel-off backing because once it's stuck, you can't get it off in one piece.

You can buy the aluminum tape described by SSOW at a hardware store. However, I don't think it will work either. You need an adapter fitting to join the two hoses. I'd start by contacting Vintage Air.

Check out the PVC connectors at Home Depot etc.

Plumbing supply or hardware store should have a selection of reducers, and hopefully something that will work for you. Or in other words, what Fred and jhow66 said.

Fred's right... I got the adapters from Vintage Air. I'm installing mine tomorrow and plan to use the aluminum foil tape at the joints so they don't slip apart.
