70 panel and Burb - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi, I haven't been here in a couple of years, but the mania that these years trucks gives you keeps me coming back. Picked up a 70 panel yesterday that somebody mounted on a 4X4 chassis. I would like to put it back on a 2WD frame again. I found a 70 burb in the woods so I may swap the bodies out. one of my questions it "what is the best way to lift these bodies up?" Also the 4X4 chassis has a strange steering box (I assume it's a 67 frame with 71 axles) the pitman comes out of the side of the box instead of the bottom and there isn't a notch in the frame like my 69 K10 to accept a later powersteering box. Can I just space the later box out or should I notch the frame? I need to do something because the way it is now it will not steer worth a crap.

Man , That is in the sticks aint it. Looks like its been there sence before the trees. Gunna have to break out the huski to get that one out. Looks like its mostly there tho. And yes, Welcome from a newcomer in Cali.

Hey Joe,
I really don't know what will happen. I do have a 67 cab & nose kicking around doing nothing. Also if the burb body isn't too scarey it might be fun to make a wild woods tour bus. If I deceide to off it I'll let you know. I'm a fair bit away from you, but heck what's a few hundred miles. I live a mile from the MA line and a mile from the VT line in NH. The drive train is as follows 250 in line year unknown 465/Timken 4 shaft (67?) and the axles are 71-72 373/1. I'm supposed to get a 3/4 ton 4X4 in this week to bone out typical NH rust, but the frame might be good.

Yeah, that puppy is in there. In front of it there is a Moosestang with a tree growing out of the engine compartment. With those Fords so close I'll have to check for wire worm infestation.

I checked the other photos and there is no visor. As far as getting the ferd rust out of the way. There is a 380 Case backhoe about 50 yds away. If I do it right maybe I can air up the tires and drive it out. Still haven't nailed the owner down. I may have to look elsewhere for a chassis. After looking over the chassis on the panel, I realize that it will need some time and energy to right the wrongs with it. IE the 71 front end is mounted too far back to accept a drive shaft. Would need to remove the rear shackles (Cut and lenghtened by PO) and reposition the front ones forward. I guess the 67 springs where shorter. At any rate I will mount the Panel on a two wheel chassis and worry about the 4X4 chassis later.

I found a 3/4 ton with a 402 big block in that same situation last year. Took about 2 months to run down the onwer. I found out that he was in prison for killing his own brother. Anyway, the guys mother gave it to some guy and I finally got a hold of him, but he was a real pain in the butt. Said he was going to restore it and wasn't interested in selling it or selling any part of it. He said he was going to have it hauled someplace to put it in storage. Oh well, still looking.

Skyhawk, Damn shame on that truck. It sound as if really needs to be rescued. I was chasing down a 69 Short step 4X4 last week and the owner was speaking of fixing up and only the right money would take it away. Long story short Two days later he sells it in a bar to a friend of mine for $50. Next day I happened to get together with my friend to scout out an estate and I mention trying to buy it for the guy, so he sells it to me then and there. You should have seen the look on PO face when I showed up to haul it away. Hee Hee Hee.....
