My "NEW" 1970 Shortbox Stepside 4x4 (PICTURES)
I just got it home. It has a 283 with 4-speed. I payed $850.00 which I didn't think was bad. It needs work, but I think it's a great start for a frame-off resto. Let me know some feedback. I have a couple of questions . Is the 4wd shifter supposed to be at a 90 degree angle toward the driver? Also, what is the standard axle ratio? I would think 3.73(originally a 307 4-speed). Thanks for any help

Looks like you will be busy for a while!
The 70's transfer case shifter points toward the driver's side. The shifter is specific to the 70 4x4's. Good luck on your truck. Jim |

That shifter is specific to the Rockwell transfercase. Very nice truck for the money.

Tom, I picked it up east of glenburn(20 miles north of minot) from a guy who has approx 28 parts trucks. He had this one sitting in his shop for 3 years. Amazingly, the motor sat for 20 years before he got it, and with a little work, it fired up.

I was under the understanding that 1969 was the last year for the Rockwell T221. What is the shift pattern of the 4 speed?
I think you got a bargain of a truck! The stepsides are pretty sought after.

I think this has been brought up before...the 1970 trucks (or some of them) still had the drivers side shift lever even though they still went to the NP205.
