Neutral Start Switch

If you're looking for something fun to do, as I was Sunday, try diagnosing a non operating neutral start switch. After ruling out battery, starter, and ignition switch, this little gizmo was the culprit. But as a bonus to my endeavors with it, my backup lites work now.

I switched from a 3 on the tree to a 700R. I went to hook up the wire for the N saftey and I was missing the plug. I think I am just going to leave it out.

How long did it take you to figure out the problem ?

Ain't it fun? I just bypassed mine but that is a long story that involves me chasing the truck across the yard after starting it from under the hood while it was in gear...DOH!

I'm going through that right now on my Z28. I've got absoulutely nothing when I hit the key, but everything else electrical works fine. On my truck with the 3 spd moved to the floor, no NSS, it will crank in gear. I assume there is supposed to be on there. Fortunately I've trained myself to make sure it's on neutral before I start it, clutch pedal or not.

Hey Mario, I'm in the same boat.... I have the Painless wiring harness for the TPI with that little extra wire for the neutral safety switch too. I called the Painless tech department to get a solution and I may as well have been calling another planet. The guy looked and looked thru manuals and never could come up with an answer. I'm going to try again and hope I get someone more useful.....

That part of their service does seem to be weak. I wanted a wiring diagram for their harness and all he would fax me was a lame schematic. Real hard to figure things out with block diagrams.

Well, when I parked it the previous day, I felt something snag as i shifted it into park. Thought maybe I had a wire or something catching the linkage. I removed the starter (it was ok but needed the solenoid tightened) then removed and reinstalled the NSS but no go. Again removed the NSS and took it apart and saw the spring loaded contact was buggered. $17 at NAPA and all's well.
