WTB-'67 4x4 steering sector
Hello all
anyone have a good (tight) steering sector for a '67 4x4 for sale? My original is worn to the point I have almost a quarter turn on the steering wheel to get a reaction on the wheels. Thanks |

I'm not sure what you mean by a sector, are you talking about a steering box? If so I may have a good one. I could check it tomorrow.

Did you try to adjust it first? I had the same problem and was able to get out alot of the play. Just a thought.......

Yes I have adjusted it but it still has alot of play and as a bonus I now have the turning radius of a Greyhound bus.

Ah, twas an easy thing to do. It would figure that a 38 year old 4X4 piece might be worn to crap. It would seem that you could rebuild one of these or up grade to something newer. Have you checked a search in the suspension section? I will check this weekend (if it's dry) in me old parts stash. You never know what kind of jewels might surface. At any rate good luck.........

Thanks again for takin' the time to look. I have tried the local parts stores to get a price on a new unit but none of their books go back further than '68. As for upgrading, my understanding is the '67 frame is not "dimpled" to accept a newer box and I dont know if I want to attempt to space one away from the frame or "dimple" my frame to make one fit. I am afraid I will screw up the steering geometry and make it worse than it is. As a side note, you said you have a '67 frame under your '70 panel? I would be interested in seeing some pictures of that vehicle. How is the ride quality? Do you have four wheel drum brakes or have you found a way to upgrade to front or rear disk? I have been considering swapping my '67 body onto a 90's+ frame to get the better suspension and brakes (I have already swapped a TBI 350 for the original 283) but I like the solid front axle.

I didn't do this vehicle, but I can tell you about it. The PO swapped in a 71-72 set of axles, but the guy was a bit challenged after he got that far. First thing he did wrong was to swap in a set of 73+ front springs which moves the axle back about 1 1/2", then the fact that a 67 Steering box will not work with the later steering linkage probably ended it for him. I am going to remove this frame and install a 2wd frame, but I intend on using this frame to build another truck. To remedy the steering box (on the 4x4), I will install a 86 4x4 blazer box I pulled at a local junker for $20. I will most likely dimple the frame myself. The easier thing to do is to find a section of 68-72 frame from the bumper mount back past the steering box to a likely spot and weld it in. As far as installing a 90s frame unless you are pretty talented and the frame contours are VERY CLOSE, you could get in deep real quick. Most times it's easier to install the later components into the proper frame for your truck. That is my intention with my 2wd frame to achieve a respectable amount of gas mileage. I have already purchased a 5 Spd from a 87 Z28 5.7 and I intend on added a very late 5.3 V8 with all the computer stuff. I need to look into 80s style front end pieces. There is certainly enough information here on the boards to help anyone though whatever process that is decided upon.

I forgot to mention that you probably have a closed (ball & socket) front end and I'm not sure what will work for a steering box, as the 67 box has the pitman coming out of the side while the later boxes come out of the bottom.
