http://www.ocbaud.com/pics/clicking.AVI
its coming from the rearengine/flexplate area. i checked the flexplate and torque conveter bolts and none are loose. nothing is hitting and it all LOOKS fine. whats happening? this started yesterday. my oil pressure is just like normal, running really high like always. |

I betcha your flexplate is cracked...
Mine made the exact same noise, and when I took the flexplate off, it was totally broken around the whole way, save an inch wide portion... Another start or two, and my flexplate would have broken clean off and ruined at least something...

its not cracked. I had the flexplate on my old 305 crack and it sounded completely different. I turned the engine at the flexplate while under there and checked with a light and i saw NO cracks anywhere. Its also a touch ass TCI flexplate too thats SFI approved.

I had a metric 200 make that noise and it was a cracked torque converter stator support.

Does the sound change when the truck is placed in gear? Does it change upon deceleration etc?

I don't know, but I have it too. Mine does it a little slower, but I probably have a slower idle than you with my stock 305.
I thought it was my flexplate, but since I was about to pull the transmission, I wasn't too worried about it. I pulled the flexplate off, and it was perfect. After I put the transmission back in, it didn't make that sound for a week. I thouht it might have been coming from the transmission, and been repaired, but then it came back. It does not really sound like a knock, at least any that I have ever heard. I doesn't really sound like a lifter, either. I hope someone here has some good ideas. Slonaker |

I've got the same noise. I was told it was piston slap. Readjusted my rocker arms twice and replaced my lifters once because I thought the noise was comming from the top of the engine, but it sounds just as bad from the bottom.

Stethoscopes work well for pin pointing noise.
