Search is temporarily disabled. Look in the FAQ forum.

I can't get the Google thing to work. It doesn't return any results when I search for text I know is in a thread. Try putting the following text in the google search:

"Hello World!"

Include the quotes. If the searching is working correctly, Google should show this thread as a result.

It seems like the 67-72 Message Board and the 67-72 Parts Board are not included in the Google search.

Google isn't perfect, but it ... well, it's the best option next to having search.

How long is "temporary" ?

Seems like it has rolled into "too-long-not-going-to-fix-it-hope-you-dont-notice". Geez.

Trying to find a thread showing up past 5 pages gets pretty dang hard to find.

temporary is until a solution can be had unfortunately... i'd rather search a few pages or see reposts, then have a "database error.. and email has been dispatched to blah blah" page to stare at. This is being worked on and not ignored, unfortunately we all have lives outside of here so it will take some time

not trying to be an @ss but is it software or hardware related? Is there anything that us "computer geek" members can do to help? (research, etc...) I'm a member of several other boards and none of them have had similar "search function" problems. Again, I'm not trying to be a hard@ss, but I've been saying for a long time that the search function was one of the best things about this site, and now it's gone.

It's damn near impossible without having a $500 a month server to myself to run a MySQL query on over 1000000 posts without major CPU usage. I'm tweaking MySQL settings and going to have to reduce the # of posts in the search index, but it'll take me awhile as rebuildng theindex takes a day or more and I don't have the time to do so right now...

I understand, time is short for everyone these days. Thanks for the info on exactly what is the problem. I'm no expert with SQL but I do have many contacts. If there is anything I can do to help let me know.

If it would be $500.00/month then you must be paying for hosted service (guessig). If this is hardware provided by the provider, then financially you will probably not be able to justify getting the type of hardware that you really need since the provider needs to make a profit off the hardware purchase rented to you.

Are you able to provide your own equipment at the hosted site??? Usually they will rent you a caged area. But that might be pricey too.

If so, Watch for Sun E450's on ebay. I recently bought one fully loaded: 4x400 MHz CPU, 2GB (maybe 4GB) RAM, 20 18GB hard drives for $650 + $200 shipping. It should have brought about $1500+. Brand new this box would have been about $80,000.00. Yes, that's right. The E450 is still a rocking box. We still use it at work for our ERP Database package. You could keep Apache+PHP on one box and MySQL dedicated on the E450. Or you could put them all on there. It would be best to keep them seperate though.

If we had the bandwidth at work, I'ld offer to host it, maybe even pop for the server part. But unfortunatley, a T1 line is pretty expensive for both you and me.

Search performance: Since vboard is a business (right?), do you have any agreement with them for tech support or software support? Can you open up a ticket with them about the search problems? There is only so much you can do with the MySQL config files and doing so might make MySQL worse. If they (vboard) are any good they should have already tested searches on a million+ records in the tables.

Like every other SQL application out there, we, the end users are held hostage to poorly designed databases, inefficiently written queries, underindexed tables, underinedxed tables, and underindexed tables, followed by poorly written queries. *sigh* been there thats for sure.

Tip in the solution: it is very difficult and expensive to overcome software deficencies (see above) with hardware. vboard *should* be able to help you out.

I do this stuff for a living and it has been my life at work and outside of work. It use to be that 67-72 trucks use to be my life and computers where secondary. *sigh* Oh the good ol days!

if you look at vbulletin run sites.. alot ( more likely most) turn off search comepletely when they are large ( 1 million or more posts) .. it has been an ongoining issue for a few years now with them. Yeah you can open up a support ticket but the answer is the same same as it has been for 4 years... reindex search and they are working on it.

I do not believe renting hardware would help his issue.. if something broke he could then drive and have to deal with the issues himself so the board could be down for longer periods of time, instead of having the server provider fix it.. It would cost more money right now to build a server and maintain it then it does to rent one now.

I got that URL off another thread at one point before. I use it quite often. It's not perfect but it works good enough for me.
