Some more progress on the firewall...
OK, I got down to the chassis shop this morning and had them roll a small bead into my filler panel. It wasn't quite as big as I thought, but I will have to work around that.
I went ahead and ground the seam down even more, then I had to use the hammer and dolly to massage the filler panel down to the firewall around the seam, since my bead didn't allow quite enough room... anyhow, I am about ready to mount it solid. Seeing as I suck arse at welding, I think i'll go ahead and use some of that hardcore body panel adhesive. I used it on my tailgate filler 2 years ago, and it worked like a dream. Then I'll probably just fill around the edges with sandable seam sealer before primer and paint. It may not end up perfect, but I am happy that I did the work, and that counts for something in my bood

That looks nice. I'd like to smooth mine a bit too. Is it a bad idea to grind that seam all the way down and just weld it?

It probably wouldn't hurt anything to do that. I just thought this would be a little easier, and the small bead rolled in doesn't look bad.
