Looking for an S-10,...

I didn't really know where to post this,... and this is where I hang out the most,... I'm looking to buy a cheap S10 pickup. Prefer standard cab 2wd short bed. At least a '89 or newer. No 2.8 V-6's! I would like to have a 4 cylinder/5-speed truck. I need some serious gas mileage. 90 miles a day at 10 miles/gallons isn't cutting it. Let me know what you got! Also move me if this is posted in the wrong spot. Thanks. Lolife99. ( I would also consider trading my '88 Chevy 4x4. The same one that gets the premo mileage I mentioned.)

From my experiences on the S-10/S-15 trucks, The 4 cylinder trucks (2.5 liter) don't last much past 100,000 miles. I had an '88 model and that's all both engines lasted in it. My 2.8 liter V6 in my current farm truck ('93 model) has around 125,000 miles right now and still going strong and doesn't use a drop of oil still between oil changes. That said, I probably won't fool with anything but the 4.3 liter from now on because of the difference in power. I've had two with the 4.3 auto - my wife has one now - '96. The 4.3 is a tough little motor - basically just a 350 Chevy will the rear two cylinders cut off. The difference in fuel mileage isn't all that great between the 2.5, 2.6 and the 4.3's.

Not starting an argument here but - my '88 2.5/5speed had 224,345 miles on it when i sold it for $200 stupid stupid stupid

and the best part of it is that the guy is still driving it every day.

It was the true milage on the truck and on the motor cause when i got the truck it had 167,000 on it and i thought the motor was knocking "classic 2.5 timing gear noise" so i pulled it all apart. Bearings looked good , cylinders looked good. So i put a gasket set it in and put it back in the truck and drove it 50k+ with no problems (other than a computer going bad)

and it got around 25mpg but i was always into the gas cause the 2.5 doesn't have all that much power. And i'm assuming the newer 2.2's weren't all that much better

I have seen many S-10's with >200k on them, with 2.5's, 2.8's and 4.3's. All fairly tough little engines. The later 2.8's had a beefed up bottom end if that's what you're worried about. The 2.5 I had got about the same mileage as the 2.8.

64 fleetside,... do you have any pics of your truck? You can PM me or post them here. I really like the old body style, for some reason,... but if the price is right, I might be converted. Thanks, Lolife99.

I just restored & sold a 1988 GMC S-15 shortbox a few years back (was my DD). It had @ 250,000KM when I bought it & had the 2.5L 4 cycl. with a 5 speed. All I can say is I'm sorry I sold it & wish I still had it! Great little truck! I'd like to get another one. The GMC S-15 had a beefier suspension package than the Chevy S-10 back then (mine did anyway). Doug

My dad had a 93 S-10 with 215K on it when he sold it. He figured the gas mileage a few times. Seemed to get low 20's city and 25-27 highway. Not sure if it was the 2.5 or 2.8 but it was a 4cyl 5 spd. He sold it to my cousin 6 months ago (who is still driving it with no problems) and my dad bought a 99 S-10 with low miles to replace it.

i had a 95 4 cyl/5spd, bought it with 62K for 2400 in houston in spring 2003. sold it in december. it was too small for what i needed so i'm gettin a full size to haul and tow with. it is a good little truck for commuting, but was under powered. a couple friends have the same truck with over 150k on the odo and still going strong. since you are looking for fuel economy, get a 4 banger/5 spd from 94 up so you'll get the fuel injection. they last a heck of a lot longer.
