Fifth Wheel On C-10
I've got a 68 and my wife and I are contemplating getting a 5th wheel RV to put on a site.
We're youth pastors and we've been doing a lot of moving lately and it's getting too hard to pack it up each time. It'd be nice to just sat "strap it all down, darling while i go and un hook it all" dock the truck up to it and take off to the next location. I've got overload springs on it and i know that the motor and trany will take it and the 3.73 rear will as well. What experience do you guys have with this? Pics would also be nice Thanks SSWJ

SSWJ,
Unfortunately, your C10 would not be able to handle all but the most modest 5th wheel trailers. It would have to be a extraordinarily tiny 5th wheel to stay safe when putting on the whoa, and making it up the hills. Best regards, Ray Wilson

1/2 ton truck is not really rated for that kind of towing. Suspension, shocks, tires (usually 4 ply) axle ( c-clip style) Much safer to step up to at least a 3/4 ton with disc brakes on the front and a full floater in the rear.

I'VE NEVER OWNED A 5th WHEEL TRAILER, BUT A 72 1/2 TON 2WD SHORT FLEET WITH A 305 THAT I BUILT , CAME WITH A 5TH WHEEL RECIEVER IN THE BED. SO DID MY 82 4WD 1/2 TON, & THE PREVIOS OWNER LIVES IN MY NEIGHBORHHOD & I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT HE PULLED A 28' 5th WHEEL TRAILER TO ALASKA & BACK TWICE THAT I KNOW OF. THESE OLD TRUCKS SURE HAULED QUITE A BIT. YOU CAN'T EVEN COME CLOSE TO COMPARING THEM WITH TODAYS TRUCKS. JOHN

Way better off with a 3/4 ton when it comes to stopping and handling!

My dad had a 1/2T ferd that he pulled a 24' or 26' 5th wheel camper with. It would pull it, but it struggled. It would toss the truck around pretty good just having a semi pass going the opposite direction at highway speeds. He quickly went with a Super Duty and boy what a change.
I wouldn't recommend using a 1/2T for long distance hauls using a large trailer. Aaron
