On my '71 4x4 I am using a Rochester 2bbl. With a granny 4 speed and 4:11 gears I need all the help I can get in the mileage department. About 11 mpg on a good day running 55-60 mph.

Believe it or not the primary barrels on a 4 barrel carb are usually ( giving you don't put a monster carb on there) smaller than the two barrel carbs. As long as you dont step into it where you open the secondary barrels you will actually get better gas mileage with a 650 or so cfm.

Edelbrock 1400 or 1406 should do anything you want. Make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks before you adjust it. After that it is a piece of cake with few problems if you don't reuse any of the older parts, gaskets, or dried vacuum lines.

67 w/350/700R4/3.73 and I have an edelbrock 650cfm (I think that's the 1406?) with the electric choke. Truck fires right up and runs great with it.

The 1406 on my 350 has been a great choice. It has been maintenance free aside from the normal upkeep you should do on a carb. I put a fuel regulator and gauge on it and set it 5 p.s.i.. My truck has never run better. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip on the bakelite standoff. Is this for a good seal between the manifold / carb and for heat insulation?

just a thick ( 5/8"-3/4") piece of the same stuff your dizzy cap is made of. cuts down on heat radiated from intake.

I'm running a Holley 650 double pumper, way better response than the 1406. The vacuum is also much better at idle.
