Sloppy steering.
I just purchased an 82 Blazer and much like the one I had years ago the steering is EXTREMELY sloppy. I would use the search function but.....um....errr there isn't one. And there a hell of a lot of pages out there.
I've been wrenching on a Toyota Supra Turbo for 4 yrs and it is a different beast altogether. I'm just not famliar with all of the things that are suspect. What am I going to have to replace/install to tighten it up?(That I won't have to immediately replace when I throw on a 6" lift<separate issue> It is stock ride height on 30's. I have a list of things to do to it but this is the most important as careening wildly through traffic, inches from others, is not my idea of fun. Next is replacing the window motors all around. It's good to be working on a domestic again. Nothing like crawling INTO the engine bay to do your work. Thanks in advance. |

First it could be the tires. next i would lay under the fornt and have someone slowly turn the steering back and forth until you can see what all may have play starteing at the gear box. make sure it is tight against the frame and there are no cracks around it. Another thing to check is the front cross member. My rivets had worked loose over time and the whole front end was shifting back and forth as it was turned. You should also be able to see if all the joints are good.

Thank you.
I'm jumping in today with both feet with a tuneup and window motor swaps. |

The tuneup was a lot easier than I remember. I installed an Accel coil and it runs VERY nicely now.
However the window motors are a nightmare to figure out the first time. 1st window=1hr+15cuts. 2nd window=15minutes. |

Yup,those P/Ws are a PIA to service.Although,it`s more like a PIF(finger),PIK(knuckle),PIH(hand),or PIF(forearm).

Owning one to many blazers...
Usual list of suspects... 1) Drag Link 2) Steering Gear Box (if output shaft moves up and down) 3) Add 1 steering gear frame brace from Offroad Design... 4) And sometimes but not allways a tie rod.... Of course this is assuming its a K series and not a C5...if its the C5 i'd say idler arm and pitman arm. Getting a gear box for my chalet tomorrow and a set of new front leaf springs from alcan some i don't kill myself on the way to wyoming. And since you are in northern cali....might drop a line at our web sight blazerchalet.com and send aaron an email as he has just as many K5's as i do and he lives up your way....bay area. He could give you some pointers also. DW
