Please help fast
middle of HEI conversion. Is this right? remove old crap, drop in hei, take power that went to coil and put to pat plug on hei, and then connect wires. Done all this and truck wont start. turns over and it has spark(ouch) but wont start. I am moving distrib to try to find the timing and i cant get it. I read on a old thread about changing gap of plugs to .045. Is that my problem?
Thanks, Mario

I am not a wiz at this but do you #1 cylinder at TDC and rotor pointing to #1? I think that's what you want. Only helped do this a couple times.
You also might have dist 180 degrees off.

Hopefully you kept track of where your plugs were in the dist. cap. From what I remember reading what used to be the #1 plug is now the #2 plug. You have to move what was the #1 plug one spot CCW...
I'm probably wrong...

I was at TDC when I replaced it. I have done it 180 before and I learned my leason. I am curious about the gap of plugs and if I am missing something with wires.

Try going into chat. I haven't been in there tonight but am sure someone can talk you thru it. They helped a guy a while back with same problem.

make sure you have a full 12volts to the HEI,the old points only ran 8volts,it was regulated, run a hot wire from the fusebox "key on hot" to the HEI....

If you have spark, do you have fuel?
Spark and fuel should do "something". Spark without fuel won't do anything. |

Paul- see no reason not to have fuel. I didn't touch that.
alex- can't get the chat room to open. What gap are you guys or gals running on a small block with HEI?

Forgot to add -
If you have spark, the gap on the plugs and the wires are not the problem. Something should be happening. Backfires, etc.? - but pretty sure something should be going on. Good luck. |

SC- I just tried running a hot wire fron both the radio plug and the heater plug and it was the same. I believe those are 12V.

Paul-- I am going to go look at the carb and fuel lines right now. Is there something specific you might recommend?

I am getting pleanty of fuel! What ever it is I guess it will have to wait until tomarow. I live in a townhouse and I don't think the neigbors like me trying to start the truck this late! B/c if I got it started then it would take a few to set the timing. I don't beleive in a quiet exhaust. lol I have had the HEI sitting for over a year now and finaly Glen at Parts Plus said the magic words." BETTER GASS MILEAGE" With the move to Flordia next month I can use that! So I bought a new cap, rotor, and coil for the bastatd and figured it would take a few hours. Now I have to take the wifes truck to work in the am. But that aint so bad b/c now I get to leave work at 10 to take her to work and the boy to school. THAT IS GREAT. I also bought a Tach tonight and will install that when I get her running.
I have one for you guys. I run a '68 3/4, 4.10 rear, th350 and a '69 327 from a Camero that was built custom for top end. I know it is missmatched, but that is another story! Is there any thing that I can do( cheapley) to help me in the 3000 mile journey across the country? I will be towing a trailer of crap I made out of my 1/2 to parts truck. I know the best thing would be to get either a overdrive trany or some higher gears, but that is a little spendy! What do you think?

I ain't no guru on anything, but here's what I would check. I might be full of beans, but -
You DO have spark, right? Then you need fuel. Assuming you have a carb. Look down it and pump the accelerator. Do you get gas spraying? If so, like I said before, "something" should happen. (like getting your eyebrows burnt off from a backfire) If nothing happens, rotate the cap and keep trying. Another idea - Do you have an older Holley carb? If so, if it ever backfired, you might have blown the power valve. It won't start. Just ideas to check. Someone with a lot more knowledge than I can probably help you out. Hope so. If you still can't make it go, let me know. I'll ask some of my smart friends. Good luck |

The gap is usually at .045 for HEI, but it should run even on the stock points gap.

I know I have spark b/c the wife turned the key and I got shocked! She then found the tach on the seat and was unhappy. lol Thats to bad. I use a q-jet and I watched the fuel flow in. I am going to start from square one tomarow and hope that I missed somethiing stupid. If all else fails, I actuly like the points system.
