Which engine would you choose?

Just curious what you guys would do. I have a 70 burb with 307 / 400at combo. In the future I would like to install a crate engine. Which engine would you install and why.

GM Performance parts HT383
340 hp at 4,500 rpm
435 tq at 3,500 rpm
$4,095.95 (Summit)

--- or ---

GM Perfomance parts 454 H.O.
425 hp at 5,250 rpm
500 tq at 3,250 rpm
$4,995.95 (Summit)

I will be using it for cruising and just basic screwing around for now, but in the future it may be used to pull an average size camper.

The 383 is a killer engine with good torque and hp.

i would build my own for that much money and know that what goes in is what i want and made sure it was done right there was a article about crate engines on how they pump out like candy sometimes they dont machine it right or stop one day and come back forget where they left off and mistorque bolts were found just got to be careful what you get from them

Well,after you run a BB .....the only thing you wont like is the "fuel problem"....a sb wont even stack up! No, that 383 stroker(I run 1).....does NOT even begin to play with the 461" OLDS that ran several seasons in my longhorn.....425 ponies/500+ tork......7mpg , driving easy. Yes, it was fun....pop it into pass gear @ 65.....rubber smoke! The shift out of pass gear was around 100mph(more rubber SMOKE).......big blocks are bad to the bone! L

I would go with the HT383. It will have all of the power where you need it to tow. The HO454 is more for fun with the real power coming in well over your cruising rpm when towing. The only difference would be how fast you burn off the tires empty.

My 2 cents> 454, big heavy rig needs bottom end torque, especially if you do end up towing. I think a 454 would not have to work as hard and would last longer. Either way, gas mileage is gonna make you cringe.

I wish I had the skill, tools and time for this approach. I am limited to turn key engines more or less. The GM engines do come with warranties though.

I am pretty used to crappy gas mileage. The best any of my trucks get is 14 and the worst is about 6 or 7. I work close to home so my work drivers always get really bad mileage.

I like the BB but the SB 383 does have good tq numbers. I still don't know which way to go. The BB does look more impressive in that big old engine bay of our trucks.

With Gas Headed for 3 Bucks Per.....

gallon this year (hear me now and believe me later...) I'd be looking for a mild 350 with a 700R4 setup to squeeze some mpg outa the rig or its gonna sit until you save up your allowance till you can afford a tank of freakin' gasoline. Honselty, how much drag racing and boat hauling do you ACTUALLY do? Percentage-wise, I'd bet less than 5% of the time.... Just my $.02. H.

What can we say? The biggest sport ute should have the biggest engine. 454 cubic inches of pure torque. The Vortec 7400 (L29) big block V8 engine uses sophisticated technology to provide impressive horsepower and torque output, and long intervals between recommended service. The big block mill puts out some 290 horses at 4000 rpms and an impressive 410 lb.-ft. of torque."

You numbers (HP/Torque) would probably go up since you won't be running a stock exhaust or cats. If you want gas mileage your going to have to use and OD tranny. I've got an LT1/4L60E/3.73 gears in my 48 truck and it will get around 20 MPG on highway at 75.

If I were you I would buy Hart-Rob's motor. It would give you the best mileage and most worry free miles of what you want! And it is cheaper!
But if you are set on one of the two engines you posted above, I would go with the big block. It will fill your need the best for what you described that you want to do with it!

I'd definitely vote Big Block, if you don't mind the $900 difference.

The 383 makes more scence to me. What a concept, a stroked small block that will kick a.. on most big blocks. Less money, easier to cool and more importantly with all the 383 stuff on the market nowadays, a whole lot cheaper to rebuild.

Never been too caught up in the gas prices, of course I want it cheaper, but you've got to pay to play.

I'll go along with him saying that 383's are cheaper to rebuild, but there are plenty of parts for BBC's as well.

Don't forget you will have to change all brackets, exhaust manifolds, etc. to switch from small block to big block.

If money and gas is no object, I would go with the ZZ572. How does 600 HP at around 5700 RPM sound? I think this would make a 383 seem a little drab.
