Went to a local truck pull yesterday and in the ''stock'' class there was a 72 longhorn 4x4, the guy claimed it was factory stock and had a build sheet to prove it (which I never saw). Anyway it was a 3/4 ton camper special with the long fleetside box with the extension in the front and it had, what he said was a factory 454. Was there anything like that produced in 72? I thought there were no big blocks put in 4x4's before 73....just wondering for the sake of saving the next argument (sp) Thanks Gord

There were NO big block 4x4's in 72 and I have never heard of a 4x4 longhorn, either.

That's exactly what I said but I had no proof, any idea where a guy could get some reliable info to have before the next time we meet?

they also didn't put 454's into pickups until 73'. I would have to see the original build sheet or dealer invoice to believe any of it.

No big block 4 wheel drives, and no four wheel drive longhorns.

Tell him to put up or shut it.

Glovebox stickers and build sheets can be faked. You can buy blanks and fill them in however you like.

Never heard of such a thing either. No 454's and certianly not in a 4x4.

More like some time in the mid '80s for a big block 4X4, then K30/K3500 only.

No 4X4 longhorns
No 4X4 133 inch wheelbase chassis (longhorn chassis)
No 4X4 big blocks
No 454

No way it is anything close to original. Get a GM restoration packet for 72....fudge a VIN together...or use some one's VIN on here, and call GM. (there is a thread in the FAQ) It is free, and it'll make him shut up.

There is a chance of a COPO truck havin a 454.... but none of that other stuff.
A NAPCO 4X4 conversion maybe...but they were pretty much out of buisness byu then if I'm not mistaken.

Some special order commercial chassis were available with bb and 4X4 but only 402. In checkin cab and chassis wheel bases a long horn bed would fit on one of the available wheel bases, so it could kind of be factory built

Could be a 60" C-A cab`n`chassis with a Longhorn bed which would have a diferent model# than a Longhorn,not factory.It could be all factory,built by him.The 454 should have kept him out of the stock class.Definately not a stock item available in any model truck from that year.

Thanks for the info guys....you all confirm what I thought from the start. He won the light class, my brother got 2nd, and another Chevy got 3rd; in the heavy class my brother got first, another Chevy 2nd, and I'm not sure who got third...but in the heavy class there were 6ford diesels that were chipped and had the large exhaust, same for the 4 Dodge diesels, but they didn't have what it took to win...lots of black smoke, but no wheel speed. BTW my brothers is a 77 with a 454 in it.
