Your opinion - 69 CST/20 w/bucket seats

I found a 1969 CST/20 with original bucket seats and console. I will post pictures later when I find a cable. It was an original 396 truck though it has a rough running 73> 350. This is at a salvage yard and they want $800 + tax and back license fees since 2003. I am guessing $1000. It would take a bit to make it a driver. The engine runs poorly. The trans shift into gears but I did not road test it. Right front fender is crashed but only in front of the wheel well. The front chrome bumper isn't perfect but could be a driver. I found zero rust. The inside of the bed is a 7 of 10. Glass is good. The only thing I saw was there is no chrome around the windshield. After market rusty chrome wheels with almost new tires. The dual exhaust looks very good with rusty headers. Looks like the brake booster has been changed to a van/corvette style. No major dents other than the right front fender. Of course the grill outer shell is dinged. For some reason the bed does not sit even on behind the cab. Why would it sit more to the drivers side? It has dual saddle tanks and a carpet covered cab tank. A stereo has been added so that leaves a chance of the dash being cut. Front coils and rear HD leafs.

Here is my question. Is it worth it if I need to replace the engine and or transmission? The accident was not enough to bend the frame but how could I tell if the frame was bent?

I want to make the decision before 5:00pm today. Thanks.

Sounds like a good deal, pending no frame damage. Is the bed not lining up "up and down" or "left to right"? If its up and down it could just be the cab mounts are shot and the cab is actually sittin lower than the bed. If the bed is lined up wrong left to right, could be frame damage, or it could have been taken off at one point and not put back on correctly. Zero rust? No holes in doors/rockers/corners? Shoot, if you buy it and part it out theres easily a couple G's in parts

I forgot to include it is an AC cab. All the parts are there though some of them being in a box. The 73> engine has a passenger alternator. The doors do have speaker holes in the usual place. Front drum brakes The truck has been sitting for a long time, I think.

I am sure the seat and console would sell easily and for a good price. What are the other parts?

I also have a CST/20, a 1970 but no buckets. Uncommon trucks, I had a tough time finding anyone with emblems for this trim, ended up buying a few sets from board members. So I'd say grab it, I bought my '70 and replaced the engine/tranny and now have a very solid truck, with a warranty! (GM crate engine)

Thanks boarxman. I figured at least that since it would include all the hardware and the floor braces if there are any.

Where is the other $1650? The wheels are rusty chrome but the tires are very good but tires are difficult to sell because of the shipping. The front bumper, maybe. Radiator looks to be in very good condition. The engine and accessories not 67-72. Has all the AC parts. The glass is good. Steering wheel. The cab and bed have onlt the normal surface rust on the underside. AC battery tray.

I definitely have enough parts to put it on the road then I would have a VIN matching Cab and Frame. What to do

If it came to 1000 total this would be a good deal. The buckets/console are easy to sell, and the cab with bucket seat brace or just brace alone would go pretty fast.

Tim, we talked about this earlier. Hope this clears it up for you.
Ok, this is gonna be a long post for California Registration Fees.

The DMV will waive back registration fees on a vehicle you have purchased or own if you follow this section of the California Vehicle Code. I actually did this about 5 years ago. This info is current for 2005. If they ever delete or change section 5051 we are hosed. Hope this saves SOMEONE some dough. [edit: Of course if you can't have been driving it on the road with expired registration!!]

Nonoperated Vehicles

4604. (a) Except as otherwise provided in subdivision (d), prior to the expiration of the registration of a vehicle, if that registration is not to be renewed prior to its expiration, the owner of the vehicle shall file, under penalty of perjury, a certification that the vehicle will not be operated, moved, or left standing upon any highway without first making an application for registration of the vehicle, including full payment of all fees. The certification is valid until the vehicle's registration is renewed pursuant to subdivision (c). This says ya gotta non-op the vehicle prior to the current registation expiring except when you follow subdivision (d).

(b) Each certification filed pursuant to subdivision (a) shall be accompanied by a filing fee of fifteen dollars ($15) . This and the current years registration and transfer fee is all ya gotta pay. You only have to pay $15 + the transfer fee if you are not going to register it.

(c) (1) An application for renewal of registration, except when accompanied by an application for transfer of title to, or any interest in, the vehicle, shall be submitted to the department with payment of the required fees for the current registration year and without penalty for delinquent payment of fees imposed under this code or under Part 5 (commencing with Section 10701) of Division 2 of the Revenue and Taxation Code if the department receives the application prior to or on the date the vehicle is first operated, moved, or left standing upon any highway during the current registration year and the certification required pursuant to subdivision (a) was timely filed with the department. This says you are exempt from penalties if you are not transfering the car if you follow (a). So if you screwed up and did not non-op the car prior to the registration expiring it is no big deal.

(2) If an application for renewal of registration is accompanied by an application for transfer of title, that application may be made without incurring a penalty for delinquent payment of fees not later than 20 days after the date the vehicle is first operated, moved, or left standing on any highway if a certification pursuant to subdivision (a) was timely filed with the department. This is the actual section that says the penalty fees are waived. Just as long as you follow (a.)

(d) A certification is not required to be filed pursuant to subdivision (a) for any of the following: This says the followin vehicle descriptions are exempt:

(1) A vehicle on which the registration expires while being held as inventory by a dealer or lessor-retailer or while being held pending a lien sale by the keeper of a garage or operator of a towing service.

(2) A vehicle registered pursuant to Article 4 (commencing with Section 8050) of Chapter 4 of Division 3.

(3) A vehicle described in Section 5004, 5004.5, 5004.6, or 5051, as provided in Section 4604.2. However, the registered owner may file a certificate of nonoperation in lieu of the certification specified in subdivision (a). Now this is the important part. Section 5051 defines a car owned by a collector. The collector can be a hobbyist!!!! It can even be a Geo Metro!!!

(4) A vehicle registered pursuant to Article 5 (commencing with Section 9700) of Chapter 6 if the registered owner has complied with subdivision (c) of Section 9706.

(e) Notwithstanding Section 670, for purposes of this section, a "vehicle" is a device by which any person or property may be propelled, moved, or driven upon a highway having intact and assembled its major component parts including, but not limited to, the frame or chassis, cowl, and floor pan or, in the case of a trailer, the frame and wheels or, in the case of a motorcycle, the frame, front fork, and engine. For purposes of this section, "vehicle" does not include a device moved exclusively by human power, a device used exclusively upon stationary rails or tracks, or a motorized wheelchair.

I think it was midyearvette who made some of the pieces, or had them made. I've heard that most of them are the same braces that are found under a bench seat cab, but the long brace across the front would be hard to reproduce. Blazer floors are the same though. Here are some pics of the front brace.
