20" Tire Question

Okay, Friday afternoon I went and priced the set of tires that I would like to run on my truck. Now, I'm filled with even more questions than before. I've read about every thread on 20's and what tire size people are running, but I still haven't found all the answers. While I was there, they were a lot of help, especially in trying to convert the stance of my truck currently and how the tires will be with the drop on and so on. The tires that I got priced on were 265/35r20's for the front, and 295/45r20's for the rear. Am I going to have rubbing issues with they size in the front and/or rear? Any information or feedback will be greatly appreciated. I'm planning on dropping my SWB 3.5 inches in the front, and either 4 or 5 inches in the rear, just to add a little more information. that 295/45 is going to be huge in comparison to the front tire. You might like it, but I personally think that would be too much difference in the tire size. Its going to look like a rubberband on the front and a fat tire on the rear.

See, that's what I was worried about. I'm not into that kind of look, but I can't quite figure out what size I need to run that would look good, without an extremely hugh sidewall. Does a 285/30 rear, and 255/35 front look good? Or would anyone have any suggestions?

Just for grins, I threw on my 20's from my '03 on the front of my '67 and the tires are 275/45/20 and they were huge!! So big it raised the whole truck up by about 2 inches. Looked stupid. Too much tire. Also, out back that's a wide tire. I couldn't get mine on out back due to the axle flange being too large for the hub on the wheels (3-1/2 flg vs 3" hub) but just by throwing it up on the lugs it looked like it was going to be super close to the inside wheel tub on the frame side. Hope this helps a little. I'd go with a lower profile tire out back for sure. Why don't you go with 265/35's all around?

I was kind of wanting to run a little bigger tire on the rear, just to give it a little different effect, but after I left the tire shop Friday, I wasn't quite sure about the tire size either. I guess back to the drawing board, I'm seen trucks with the tire fitment of 285/30 rear and 255/35 front and it doesn't look to bad. If anyone has the issue of Custom Classic Truck from July of 2004 the baby blue '69 is running this tire combination. Anymore replies or input is greatly appreciated.

I am running on my 63- 245-40-20 and 295-40-20. The fronts are about 27.7" tall while the rear is 29.5" Perfect combo. Enough side wall.

That 245/40 and 295/40 combo looks bad a$$, but it depends on the look you are going for. I also like the 245/40 and 275/35 combo, they are almost exactly the same height, just wider in the rear. That is what I had on my jimmy.
I will probably go with the 295/40 next go round.

I'm in the process of building my 67 and am running a 275/45/20 all the way around, I am going to do a lot of body massaging to get it to lay out but the bed tucked really nice and I had about a inch clearance from body to tire. I personally like more side wall because of my previous truck, had a 96 toyota tacoma the layed out on 19's with a 40 series side wall. I felt everything even with the air suspension, But its up to the person. I still didnt moch up the front fender, but I have 5 1/2 in of back spacing and it should tuck i'll try to get some pics up soon

just a quick question for you guys, will back spacing of 5.4 on 20x8.5 work on a truck that lays frame? or what about 5.5 on 22x9

No. I don't think so! I got I believe is 6 inch. I am going to buy new front eventually with a 7inch backspace.

WOAH!! Are you sure about that??? I've got a disc conversion on the front of my '67 and put on my 20x9 wheels with 5.79" of backspacing and it was too much backspacing. Luckily there weren't any clearance issues, but they were way further than necessary from the fenders. Not saying you don't know what you're doing by any means and not trying to flame anyone, just double-check your measurements. There's bagged guys on here running 4-1/2" backspacing and tucking rim.....

Don't need to double check my measurements! You need that much offset/backspacing to drive super low and steer lock to lock.

hmmm....... does anyone have pics of what 7" rims would look like? I could see that you would need that much for driving around slammed but how would it look when raised up?

OK, I paged back up and realize why you are saying 6-7" backspacing. The question in the thread was asking about backspacing for a '72 (if I'm assuming correct since there is a '72 in his sig). The pic you posted is of a pre-67 truck, so the backspacing is probably different for that body-style vehicle. The information I found on this site is that 4.5 - 5" of backspacing is plenty to lay out on and tuck with the 67-72 trucks.

I too wanted a certain look with my tires for my 20's. I didn't want to low of a profile, yet i didn't want the SUV thick sidewall look either. I found after alittle research that a 40 series sidewall is a great compramise between the thick and thin.
