How do I remove Wipers at base? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I need to remove my cowl to paint, but can't figure out how to remove wipers at the base? I don't want break them! Anybody know the trick?

There's a retainer clip at the base of each arm. Kind of like the inside door handle. I cant remember what type of clip it is though. I do remember it was a pain in the butt to remove them. I think I used a set of small needle nose pliers. I'll double check when I get off of work...

Put a rag on the cowl and use a claw hammer just under the edge on the back side to pry up, hang on to the arm as it will fly off and scratch your paint.

here i had this from a previous post

don't mind the blue marks. first push the clip in the direction of the arrow, and pry off arm in direction of it's arrow. more than likely it won't just come off, use pb blaster or oil and pull or pry hard. watch the paint on the cowl and you could bent the metal there if you pry too hard.

Although I am sure people have done it by pushing the clip up, my advise is to get this . I tried the same advise given here but none of it worked. I bought this tool and it came off in 2 seconds. The tool actually goes over the top so there is no danger of messing up the cowl (something I already had done before buying the tool

). Unfortunately, no local parts store carried so you might just want to order it online and wait if you can.

WHY ON EARTH WOULD ANYBODY USE THE PROPER TOOL FOR REMOVING THESE IN A COUPLE OF SECONDS, WHEN THEY COULD USE CHANNELOCKS OR VISEGRIPS, CLAW HAMMERS, PRYBARS, SCREW DRIVERS OR MY ALL TIME FAVORITE........ AN ENGINE HOIST & A SHORT PIECE OF LOG CHAIN. I USSUALLY GET THESE OFF IN ABOUT 20 OR 30 MINUTES, WITH MINUMUM DAMAGE TO THE HOOD, COWL, FENDERS & THE CAB. JOHN

After trying both methods the getting it off in under a minute and having a beer is a lot better than grabbing needlenose pliers and cussing and grunting for a half hour. Choice seems obvious to me.

i can do it in less than 5 (BOTH SIDES) with a tiny screw driver on the clip and a big screw driver or pry bar to pull the wiper arm off. and that was the 1st time i ever experimented with wipers, quite simple.

Sometimes those arms seem damn near welded on. I bought the remover tool from JC Whitney about 10 years ago and for 5 bucks I'd do it again if I lost the one I have. For that kind of money, there's just no reason to risk scratching up your cowl or shoving a screwdriver through your palm...
